straight pipe to replace cat

Hi, I have a v10 F250 and I just put on a single chamber flowmaster that sounds really good but i would like the truck to be louder. My question is are there any negative effects on the truck if i get rid of the cat and run a straight pipe?

Thank You,

Nathan

Well first off, it is illegal to do what you are proposing. You can however put of a smaller and louder cat. Question, why are you running a muffler at all. A lot of guys like the sound of the big cat and straight pipes.

I know it is illegal but would this be bad for the truck in any way? I am running a muffler because it sounds cleaner. I have tried without and it just sounded kind of dirty. Thanks for your response

What year is your truck? How many cats do you have?

A catylitc converter isn't a muffler but acts exactly like one. Think about it; if you don't like the sound of your truck without a muffler, are you going to like it without a cat?

Hard to believe your truck isn't ear-peircing loud already. There's a V10 that goes up and down our road all the time and he's obnoxously loud.

My truck is a 99' with a single very large catalytic converter I have been told that is why the truck is still quiet. I think i would like to either run a sraight pipe or just a smaller cat but yeah the truck is not loud at all even with the flowmaster

Hmmm. Have you thought about swapping that cat out for a smaller one?

If there are no sensors on your cat i believe you should be fine with replacing it with a pipe. Not all places is it illegal to take off cats.

Its suppost to be illegal to not have them here but many people do anyways and no one gets in trouble. I personally love the sound of my truck.

I've got three trucks a 88,89,02 and the older ones have had the cats cut off for years. I aint gonna touch the cats on the 02 because i dont want a check engine light blinding me. But i've heard the v10's with no cats and a flowmaster they sound awesome. If it was me id try it with a piece of flex pipe and see of it triggered the check engine light if it did id put a cat back on it. On my 02 i had it strait piped for a while with all four cats still on it it sounded great but i took it to the beach which was a 8 hour drive and it just got annoying so i put me a glass pack on it and couldn't be happier

Yeah that's more what I was concerned with I don't want a check engine or anything like that but I think I'll give it a try and see what happens thanks for the replies

I really hate to tell ya this but.....

Any epa, aqmd or fish & game staff can impound the truck, tagged as a gross pollutor and gues what, ya get to go to court (county/state or federal) and sit there not allowed to say a word while a judge decides if the vehicle gets crushed or not! Your local jurisdiction and even smog guys may not enforce, but any environmental officer or federal law enforcement officer can, will 7 do impound vehicles without the proper smog equipment. They even have printed guides showing illegal engine swaps and how to recognize (mostly for the ricers).

that's some scarey stuff right here.

I'm glad I still have my first cat. I'm not sure if it's gutted or not but whatever, it looks like it's there anyway.

Take me to jail and crush my truck then. Not here in Michigan maybe in California. My truck has zero cats,no cel it runs awesome and no smog police after me.Question though, does your truck have a tailpipe?I think that's where all the sound comes from, personally I don't like the sound of a open muffler.I think your truck would sound pretty good without the cat and keep the flowmaster on with like a 3in tailpipe. As far as the cel goes I believe the o2 sensor is upstream of the cat so you will be fine.Think of how many stangers have off road h-pipe's without problems. My 95 was one of those.I'm not trying to start a war here but I personally don't care for cats I think they make a vehicle quieter and affect the sound and until they enforce it here I will not run them.
