Question 4.6L 3V MPG's

I have a Crew Cab 4X4 with the 4.6L 3V 6 speed auto with the 3:73 rear end. The truck has a little over 8,000 miles on it. Stock wheels and tires with no lift. I recently made a 665 mile round trip and my milage was 16.8 mpg's. This was all highway using cruise control set at 70 - 75 mph.

I thought my mpg's to be a little low. What have others that have this same set up experience ???

This is hand calculated. The read out on the dash said 18.4 mpg's when I filled up.

I have the same eng, supercab, 4x2, 3700 miles, not sure of the gearing, just did a trip myself and got 20.58ish with cruise at 73mph. It has the 26 gallon tank and managed i believe it was like 530 miles on a tank... would it really have that much of a diff being a 4x4? Or possibly strong head winds, uphill, or low air pressure in tires??

Yea the 09+ 4.6 (not sure about the 5.4 but it should be the same) have redesigned heads that use standard spark plugs and not the super long ones that get stuck in the heads like before. If you want to see a picture and the difference between the two go to Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto and look up the 09 verses previous years. They usually have parts pictures and sometimes link you to the manufactures drawings, plus they sell a variety of parts at good prices and offer a lot of options on different brands.

To answer the miliage question, I have an 09 4x4 Supercab, with the 4.6, 6speed and 3.55 rear gearing. I average between 16-17 around town (combo of city and highway) and the last trip I took I got about 21.5 (driving between 60-70). I have the 36 gallon fuel tank. These figures are hand calculated, and my mileage increased slightly the more miles I put on the truck (currently 5k, probably due to breaking) If you are wondering about how this engine/trans/gearing combo drives, I love it, it has plenty of power and I have never had a problem towing or hauling anything. Hope this helps you out. On a side note there is a point in speed where my mileage drops off significantly (usually about 70-75mph), this is more then likely due to the aerodynamics of our trucks, or lack there of, hard to push a brick through the air, lol.

4.6L 3v super crew with the 3.15 rear end (SFE) display usually stays above 22mpg, hand calculated comes out to 20. All interstate @ 70mph. The trucks a dog off the line with the 3.15's but I've never driven another one to compare it to.

I don't think you will regret getting the 4.6L 3V. My old truck (99 powerstroke) is not missed after driving my new truck for a few months. The 4.6L pulls our 18' boat and 16' lowboy trailer just as well or better than my old diesel and it does it much more quietly and smoothly.

Now if I could get the highway mileage up to 18 - 20 mpg's like the old diesel I will bet 100% satisfied with the new truck. Now I am only 98.6% satisfied.

You are welcome Jr.Ranger. Have you had the chance to go test drive a truck that you like with the 4.6L 3V yet ??? I drove two different trucks with the same set up as mine, one with the 5.4 and one with the 4.6. I felt very little difference during the test drives around town and a little on the highway.
