Fuel Milage

I see alot of people talking about getting 12 or better gpm with the v10. i have a 04 f350 sd dually 4x4 (3.73) and i get 10mpg just driving down the highway at 60 and the cruise set. It has 85,000 miles on the truck and the standard sized tires. i put a Banks Power pack system (Stinger) system on and it didn't seem to help. i do mainly towing of a gooseneck trailer and get about 6 when towing. GCWR 16000. unfortunatley this truck was in the budget and i know i should have tried to look for a deisel, but i couldn't wait i was loosing customer because i didn't have a truck to haul. Any ideas, i just read about a 3.73 and 4.10 swap. is it difficult and what is the average cost.

thanks

cfd312,

You're mileage will decrease over the highway if you go to a 4:10 swap. For your truck, I doubt there is anything you can really do to greatly increase mileage other than make sure the truck is in top shape (New Plugs, Fuel Filter, Alignment is good, tire pressure is on the upper end of the spectrum, ect. )

10 seems awfully low for a stock-height truck. I recently called about a truck in LA that was for sale and it had 40" tires and he said it got 9mpg. Oddly enough, it also has the Banks Power Pack.

My truck is 3V with 4.30 gears and 54,000 miles. Truck with my tools weighs 8100#, weighed it last Friday. I'm averaging 11.3 mpg mixed city/highway. If I do a lot of city stop and go it will drop to mid 10s, best I've seen highway was 13.2 from NH to FL @ 70mph using 87 octane. When towing 12,500# I'll get 8-9 mpg average depending on the hills. That holding 60-65 mph steady.

Could be with 3.73 gears your truck is actually working harder than having 4.10 or 4.30 gears and being in the sweet spot. Just a thought.

You should be getting better than that , if you are driving 60 mph at hwy . Try few things recommended above . I would recommend an air-filter replacement (without waiting for factory recommended 30 K interval) and use your brakes sparingly ( every time you touch brakes the mpg goes south ) . Also ,check your hoses make sure no deterioration ( vacuum leaks ) at elbows .Good luck.

I thought all F350 4x4 trucks were 4:10 gear or higher. Did they offer the 3:73 in a 4x4?

Not sure. I crawled under the truck and saw the ratio on the rear end. Is it difficult or expensive to change? What would be better, 4.10, 4.30? The truck is mainly used to pull a gooseneck.

I have a 2004 F-250 V-10 regular cab,8'bed with a 3.73 rear. On the hiway I get 14.0 to 15.0 MPG if I stay 70 MPH or lower. After 75 MPH it get in the hi 13's. Only mods are a Borla cat back exhaust and a K&N air filter.

Poor mileage

I have a 2003 F250 4x4 with the V10. I have Gibson headers, Gibson exhaust, Hypertech programmer, K&N air intake system, Y pipe, 4 inch lift, 35 inch tires and get 10 mpg going 70 on the highway and 9 mpg in town. Love my truck just wish I could get a few more MPG.

What are the recommended plugs? Should I also go with Amsoil?

I have an '01 250 with 3.73's and I'm lucky if I get 11 in the city. and on the highway its like the same around 12ish. I've gotten horrible mileage ever since our trans went 40k ago. I think the rpm's now run higher then they used too. But my dad and I are planning to do the banks full exhaust kit b/c some of the header bolts snapped so full exhaust soon and we are thinking about doing the ottomind to help or an sct. and also going to add an external trans cooler. but overall I get horrible mileage, around 230ish a tank, and thats a cc sb, 4x4 with 3.73

If you didn't recalibrate the speedometer for the 35" tires, that's part of your problem.

Just wondering what effect and to what extent taller tires make on a truck. My boss has 35's on his 5.3 1500 Chevy and says t only cost him about 1mpg. Is that same thing true with V10 SD's?

Taller tires by themselves will have very little impact on fuel mileage. The problem is that most guys forget that the taller tire will throw off the odometer so will appear that you haven't driven as far when you need to refill the tank, and the fuel mileage calculation will be off.
