Would like to get your input on what is a better block ?. The 70 ( D0VE) or a 68 (C8VE). I Have the 70 style in my 78 F250 S/C 4X4 right now and also have a 68. Is there any difference between the two, other than the year. I know the 68 heads have larger studs than the 69-70, just thought I would get some input on this subject. Also had a question on how to post some pictures of my truck. Thank's. Kelley.
Thank's for the input on the D2 block being better. Did the D0 and D2 blocks have a higher nickle content or thicker walls to make them a better choice?.
I think it had more to do with better casting and less core shift.
It's more important to pay attention to what block you have and what rotating assembly you install. The early blocks have a lower deck height than the 72 blocks and later 460 79 blocks.
The newest block you can get, A D2 is preferable over a D0. Both are more desirable than the C8 and C9.
Josh
Actually the newest 460 block was the D9TE-AB block that was used until the 460 was taken out of produciton.
Which is better? really a mute question. The D9TE blocks have a little advantage for strokers due to the longer cylinder walls better supporting the piston at BDC.
The D0VE blocks usually had a little heavier main webbing but it is really irrelevent since there are plenty of D9 blocks surviving at 700+hp
Basically none of htem have any real serious advantage over any other. There is NO truth to the wives tail about higher nickle content or ability to bore one year more then another.
Thank's for your input, and numbers. I had heard that comment before about the 70's block having higher nickle content, just wanted to clear it up. Thank's again. Kel.
He asked about a C8 and D2... I said the NEWEST he could get which also includes the D9 Josh
As I said in post #5, there is NO SUCH THING as a D2 429/460 block.
Block casting number prefixes: C8VE / C9VE / DOVE / D1VE / D9TE
Where is the so-called D2 casting prefix?
Usually casting numbers are not listed in parts catalogs, but they are for 1971/79 460 engines, because this was the ONLY way to determine what flywheel & harmonic balancers were used in 1979.
TWO different 460's were used in 1979, one has the D1VE casting number, the other has the D9TE casting number.

I'm running a D1VE block. I had it square decked down to the D0VE deck hight. I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head and I don't feel like looking them up but I think it was a difference of .022. That gets my pistons to come up to TDC. I'm running C9VE head with that.

When I originally posted the question of which block was better or was there any difference, that was between a 68 block and the 70 block that is in the truck now?. Not a 79 or 72. Was just wondering if there was any difference between the two?.
And the basic answer was no there is not any significant difference that will affect what you are trying to do between those blocks. Use the one that is in the best shape (read that as will clean up with less bore, or has a straighter deck, is just cleaner etc)

Thank you again for your words of wisdom, master. From your pedawah learner!.
