If it ain't chatterin" don't add anything. There is a fine line between not enough and too much friction modifier.

I was just looking at the photos on the first page again. Something I missed the first time I looked was there seems to be a groove around the inside sealing surface of the new cover like the kind the aftermarket models have with a rubber ring gasket. Wonder why it's there but no gasket required?
Be sure to check the links in the tech folder. The above info and more is covered there. Also, all of the above is in your owners manual.
Yep...I'm aware of the information in the manual, however...I've found that these forums are usually the best place to get "correct" information. For example...my BMW R1200GS motorcycle manual states to replace the rear diff fluid with 220cc of 75-90 GL5. The correct amount is actually 185cc and if you use the amount in the manual you'll end up pushing the outboard rear diff seal and have a big mess on your hands. That and I'm lazy....

I think it is intended to hold RTV, and this helps prevent the dry joint that we discussed in earlier posts. I layed my bead of silicone right along that groove. The groove didn't look finished well enough to accept a molded seal.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks. I think I may need to order one. Looks sharp and factory all at once. Upgrading to syn oil is a bonus as well. Now, my only question is whether to wait til it really needs to be done or just do it now. It's going to be a long time until service is required as I'm only at 7800 miles....
McMaster-Carr has a 5/16-18 x 1-1/4 Stainless Steel Serrated Flange Hex Bolts (#97646A160) for $10.02/pk (Sold in packs of 10) ... these are probably closer to the Ford bolts and you won't need to add a lock washer.
Just wanted to follow-up and let 'yall know that I ordered these bolts for my cover change and they are spot-on for a factory look.
These will be the closest thing you'll find to the factory bolt ... down to the serations n'all! No washers needed!

The truck came from the factory with synthetic oil, and you will just be changing it.

Excellent info. Thanks. Perhaps I will just swap covers then and reuse the oil.
Tempting as that might be, I would advise against it. You risk contaminating the oil with dirt and the old gasket material. You would be better off just waiting until you've put 50k miles on the truck.

That grove is an idea someone had to enhance the sealing capabilities but it has ZERO value.
