Just got a '78 Crew Cab 4x4

Hey Guys,

I found a 78 crew cab and went for it. I put pics in my gallery. It's not the prettiest thing you ever saw and has been neglected some but I didnt' get it to make a show truck out of it. I got it to take my wife and 3 kids 4x4 in the mud and on the trails and camping. I just love to see an old crew cab throwing mud!

I plan to get it mechanically 100% and lift it some and then go play! This is my first venture into 4x4 so I'll probably be on here with lots of questions. I put pics in my gallery. Woohoo!

That truck actually looks very good...congratulations, great find. It appears to have been cared for--I expected to see something really bad. You planning to put standard bed on it, or leave the configuration the way it is?

It's not in to bad of shape. Your front axle is a D44, it has ball joints. King pins would be a D60.

Plan to go with standard bed. I just took the bed off today and I'm going to put it up for sale - figured it would be easier to fix the broken spring hangar with it off anyway.

Thanks fordtrucknut! I already learned that a front dana 60 would have king pins but how can you tell that the rear is a 60? It does have the number 60 stamped on the rear end but I figured that was just too easy.

Thanks...

Nice looking truck. I think it would look good with a shorty "Logger's" box on it, but maybe I'm just biased because I remember all the logging companies had crew cabs with Logger boxes when i was a kid.

On the topic of truck bed's.... As I mentioned, I pulled the flat bed off yesterday to get at the broken hangar and clean up the frame. I plan to go with regular bed. Does anyone know if any regular short bed will fit this truck or do I need a crew cab bed?

All 1953/82 F250's have a Dana 60 rear axle. Most 1983/85 F250's have a Dana 60 rear axle.

If you post the AXLE code found on the Warranty Plate, once decoded, the ratio and whether it has Limited Slip...or not...will be known.

The Warranty Plate is located on the left door face below the latch.

The spring hanger may still be available from Ford.

Which spring hanger is it? At the front of the rear spring, or at the rear of the rear spring?

Off of the plate on the door " 150 F265 AAD G 24J
Axle code is 24J?
Trans code is G?
AAD - have no idea what that is...
F265? No idea either - thanks.
