what is the strangest thing you have had cause a flat tire?

I have had a bunch of flats. Today takes the cake. A razorblade put a 2 inch gash right in the center of my tire this morning. I wonder what the odds are of having that thin blade rest in the right position to go through the tire that way.

So besides nails or screws, what unusual items have caused your flat?

I picked up a 2"-long rock in my own (gravel) driveway once. Punched about a 1"-diameter hole in my tire, which still had probably over 50% tread life left (235/85R16, with highway tread). I backed into my usual parking space, and as soon as I opened the door, I could hear the tell-tale hissing sound. Not repairable.

I once had a plastic tee fitting from a vacuum hose from a car that was hit by a truck. Now think about that. All I did was drive past the accident and ran this tee fitting over and planted it self in my tire. needless to say with in 2 blocks I was completely flat....

I had just picked up 6 brand new tires, drove home 35 miles got the wife to show her how to spend $1000.00, then BOOM. The valve stem shot out of one the rear wheels across the street. We both jumped. Too funny.

I work on cars for a living. The weirdest thing I ever saw in a tire was a twig (stick) about 1/8" wide x 1" long stuck in a tire. I still have no idea how it penetrated.

Channel-lock pliers on the 3rd axle of the old man's truck.

A pop-top--remember those, the tops off soda cans that used to come off instead of stay in place? Inside a tube-type tire. The guy mounting it didn't see it--twice. Second time we noticed a cookie-cutter look to the hole in the tube, and found it.

I found a pair of snap-on needle nose pliers in a tire when I was working at a tire store, I also managed to back over a tree in my old Toyota and ripped out the sidewall on one of the rear tires. 14miles of trail and 75 miles of highway on a T-type spare.

How about the tip of a ball point pen, the part that the ink is in. Just the metal part was in there that was a good one.

I got this flat just yesterday afternoon on my way to work. Was traveling on the freeway just about ready to take the offramp. It looks like it is a hardened steel knife sharpener for kitchen carving knives. Obviously, neither the tire or the rim are salvagable. It punched a 1/2" hole through the tire and shot out the alloy rim like a bullet.

I am amazed at how much crap truck tires can pick up. We are forever fixing flats during harvest. Most of the crap is in the plant where we dump the beets though.

Oh and my best story about crap in the tire is when I picked up a nail or something in the Mustang rear tire. I only found out about it when the tire blew out at 130mph on a dyno run. Good thing I wasn't on the highway when it decided to exit the tire.

Scott I think you win so far for worst flat ever.

MisterCMK, I would have never thought about checking tires before doing a dyno. Definitely something to check first.

Scott, that's pretty impressive.

Another one that was new to me just a couple weeks ago was on my elderly neighbor's small cargo trailer. I was checking and filling her tires for her using one of those little 12V buzz boxes. When I finished filling the one tire, when I went to pull the nozzle off (the type with the plastic cam lock), the valve stem broke in two. Thankfully, we have a Sam's Club membership (free tire repairs).

when working a Firestone in the '90's the best thing I ever pulled out of a tire was a piece of shrapnel from a mark 85 bomb, the tire was on a UXB company truck (UXB= un exploded bomb) they cleared the ranges around Fallon, the day they dropped the tire off they had a bomb in the truck! and wanted the truck worked on! I had them go un load and bring the truck back,
I still have the piece of shrapnel, i mounted it on a piece of wood from a US navy ordinance shipping crate.
