'49 F3 pickup--interchangeble parts?

I am new to this list and am glad to find it. I am restoring a '49 F3 pickup with an 8' bed. Most of the usual catalog vendors list parts for the F1 and F2, but not too many for F3. I have found many parts (tie rod ends, etc.) to be interchangeable. Is there a good source for information on interchangeablility?

Thanks for all information!

Welcome to the FTE !
BobJ on here knows quite a bit on those f-2 f-3's (as well as lots of other's on here) here is something he has put together. WELCOME TO FAT FENDERED TRUCKS

I think the front axles F-1-2,3 are the same just different hubs?? etc.

I have an F-2 thats being parted out for a different truck I'm putting together. have the tailgate on that Auction site (those are one of a kind) as well as the rear fenders from an 8' bed, which are also going to be for sale soon.

what specifically are you needing interchange info on? I believe most F-2 F-3 stuff would be the same?? I/m sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong

Josh

Josh,

I think you might have posted the wrong link, if you're referring to my parts interchange page it's here:

Body Part Interchange Guide

The few differences between the F-2 and F-3 is the F-3 didn't come stock with rear shocks, have larger rear drums, 17" wheels which were stock Widow Maker two piece rims. The rear drums are the big hang up on the F-3. There aren't any rims that will fit over them and still allow you to use the stock hub caps. The easiest thing to do is swap out the rear axle with one from a F-2, which is easier to get parts for and will allow you to keep a stock appearance. Better yet, if you're not concerned with keeping a stock appearance, is swap in a rear axle from a pre-73 F-250 with better gears.

Welcome to the board.

Bob, your right, I guess it helps if you read it before posting the link! lol
oops. good info on the rear ends btw.

speaking of F-2 rear drums I have some new old re-lined brake shoes that were behind the seat in the 52 F-2 I have, they were still in the box, but the cardboard disintegrated when I removed them. are they worth anything to someone?

'49 F3 pickup --interchangeable parts

I am looking at catalogs like LMC or MAC's and see very little reference to F3's. However, the tie rods and tie rod ends are the same as the F1. I am wondering if other parts, such as U-joints and driveshaft center bearings, wheel bearings, pitman arms, etc. are the same also.

Josh, I will be needing a tailgate for the F3. Is it the same as your F2?

F-2 and F-3 have the same boxes, rear fenders and tailgates.

As for the other parts your best off getting a Ford truck catalog, they show up on eBay in CD form all of the time for about $30. I have both hard copies and CDs and they come in very handy for verifying and cross referencing part numbers.

Pitman arms are the same for F-1 through F-3, as is the steering boxes. The boxes, along with the pitman arms got bigger for F-4 through F-6.

F2 tailgate

Josh,
By "that online auction place" do you mean eBay?

That tailgate on eBay

Josh,
I bid on it, but got pulled away from the auction at the last minute and lost it. I will keep watching for tailgates for my F3.
