Does anyone have a link on how to replace a wheel bearing assembly, this is on a 01 excursion 7.3L. Thanks for any help.

front or rear?

 

Hey man when I changed mine on my 01 F250 there was two diff ones. The difference was the studs. They were different sizes. Think one was metric and one was standard.

Hate for you to have to take it back off. Not to hard of a job though.

 

They are not bad to do but if your stripping everything down and this is a 4x4 time to replace the front U joints if they haven't been done.

Murphys law you get it all together and a week later the front U joints on the axle start squeeking.

Good time to change brake rotors and do the brakes. If the ball joints have play might aswell do them too.

May sound expensive but it is easier to do it now than later.

Get your crying towel out the unit bearings are not cheap

 

Good tips here. How much you talkin for the bearing assemblys? And how do you know when you should change out you bearings.?

 

I haven't had to buy one yet but I heard they are around 500 each

You can't tell when a unit bearing is about to go because you can't inspect the bearings

The days when you had separate wheelbearings you could inspect them.

Even class 8 trucks are using these unit bearing assemblies.

 

Thanks guys, here is the deal. We just bought a 01 excursion 7.3 4x4 with 114000 miles. It needs the left wheel bearing, right upper ball joint, but will replace bottom also, both locking hub assemblies, the pads are about 1/3 left but the rotors look good so probably just a light resurfacing and the rear pinion is leaking. This is our first superduty style rig so just trying to get all the correct procedures before I start. The dealer bought the wheel bearing assembly, which was $321 and that is with 20% off. I think I can get the hub assemblies for around $100, ball joints will probably be about $100 also. Hopefully the bearing assembly is the correct one.

 

The 01 takes the coarse thread studs. You can grease those hubs through the abs hole also. No need to resurface the rotors. Make sure the pinion is tight with a slight drag on it.

 

How do you grease the bearing through the abs hole.
