plastic side gas tank sending unit removal

Any tricks/tools to get the plastic screw on cap off? I can't get it to budge. It's leaking somewhere on the outside of it and I fixed it when it was warmer out with JB weld. Then I mostly fixed the exhaust, with it dumping right at it. Now the JB's gone and melted away and it's too cold to put new stuff on.

If I can get it off I'd kinda like to replace it as the fuel gauge doesn't work but I dunno if it'd even fix it as the ammeter and water temp gauges don't work (only speedometer). Oil pressure gauge sending unit is MIA so I kinda know why that gauge doesn't work. I've only found a new sending unit on LMC, and maybe advance auto but for $50 I'd rather just guess at how much is in the tank.

Any idea's on getting it off/out without dropping the tank and/or shield?

Got it out, had to drop the tank with ~8 gallons of fuel still in it. Now it's all fubar and Napa only lists sending units for the rustable rear tank. I beat out the sending unit from the "holy" rear tank in the bed , they appear to be the same part just with different bends.

Can I get a sending unit for the rear tank, bend the line to the right shape and put it in? At this point I don't really give a hoot if the fuel gauge works (none of the others do...) but it'd be nice if it does.
