Diesel question

I don't know a lot about the different diesel engines, that's why I ask questions. Alot of people complain about the new ford diesels (6.0 and 6.4). Why doesn't ford just hook up with Caterpiller. Why can't the Cat C7 be used for Ford trucks? I have heard the the best diesel engines are Cat's. I know there are certain EPA restrictions on diesels, which I believe is why Ford got rid of the 7.3 and tried the 6.0 and now the 6.4, let the learning begin.

Mostly it's a packaging issue. Cat engines are large, and heavy. Partly legal. Ford had a long term contract with Navistar.

With all the complaining I've heard about the Navistar diesels, wouldn't it be benificial to ford to go with Cat? Large and Heavy? Isn't that what diesels are about?

Navistar temporarily stopped shipping Ford its new 6.4-liter Power Stroke diesel engines and filed a countersuit seeking several hundred millions of dollars because Ford intended to introduce a new diesel engine that was designed by International Truck and Engine Corporation before its joint-manufacturing agreement with Navistar expired in 2011.

Legal issues aside, IH makes a good engine. Their inline sixes are legendary. The Cat C7, and its predecessor, the 3126 aren't known for durability. Hands down, the Cat 3406B is one of the best engines put in big trucks. Lots of guys actually do odd engine swaps to their Super Duty trucks. I was one of em. I had a 99 F250 and I was going to put a DT466 and Allison in it. Things happen, and I had to sell everything. There's also a few 90s F250 & 350s with Cummins 8.3, Cat 3126, and Detroit 6V53s. The 7+ litre med duty engines cant even meet the Federal emissions standards of a pickup. Nothing stopping you from doing it, but no manufacturer will produce a truck that good.

The Ford/Navistar battle was mostly Fords fault if You ask Me. Ford did things with the 6.0 that the engine was never designed for. Then blamed Navistar.

Every supplier makes, or has made a good engine. Its just not feasible to offer them all in a med duty pickup.
