intermit. rough idle, check engine w/ P0171 & P0174 codes
Tom, Im having the same problem with my expi. I stop at a light and the idle drops, and the truck starts shaking, and it will go away within about 30 sec. or if I give it a little gas. Im going to check the valve in the morning see if it's the prob!

Just to clarify... it's not the valve that usually goes bad... it's the rubber boot on the back of the intake that connects the hose going from the pcv valve to the intake.
I couldn't see it on our truck... just had to feel around till I got it.

Thanks for the great info. I, too, had the same problem with the rough idle. I was just about to call my dealer to have them check the codes for the "Check Engine" light, but I did an internet search first. I found this forum and the symptoms were exactly the same as what I had, so I picked up the part (F85Z-6C324-AA) at my local Ford dealer. One of the service techs was kind enough to show me exactly where the boot was at the very back of the engine. I let the engine cool overnight and removed the worn out boot (it had an eraser-size hole in the corner) and installed the new rubber boot within 15 minutes. My Expy runs great now. I appreciate everyone's input on the forum, especially "tapenick."

I did have a little pinging right when I would hammer down on it... not much though. Not all the way through the RPM range... just initially.

ok i figured it out (or ford did), i checked all the vacum lines and they were all good. so i took it to the ford dealer and they did a diagnostic and found out it was the mass air flow sensor ($165.00 part + $71.00 diagnostic) . it took about 5 min to install, an idiot could do it. so i drove it and it runs great no ping & no check engine light.
thans for all your help, i hope my findings will help someone else out.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Oct-02 AT 04:12 PM (EST)]answer= do you know where your air filter is? the mass air flow sensor is located in your air intake opposite of where the air filter is inserted. so in other words if you are opening the latch to take out the air filter, the mass air flow sensor is in the tube oppisite the air filter. it looks like an alluminum tube with a small 1/2" hole on the left side as your looking at it.
to answer your other question the only way i found out was from a diagnostic through ford.
i hope i helped, if not e-mail me and give me your # and i will call you back.

the $165.00 part was from ford, i looked for after market but no one carried it or it would take 8 weeks to get in . but after looking on e-bay today i found a k&n intake filter system w/ the mass air flow sensor for only $75.00. and that system is the hot ticket if you want increased hp and torque.
so i would suggest checking e-bay prices before slapping down $165 bucks.
let me know what happens, talk to you later,
