Bought a 390 with an Edelbrock Performer 390 intake manifold and I noticed that the manifold had a pretty long crack around one of the bolts that hold it on. I pointed it out to the seller and asked him how the truck ran and he insisted that it ran great. Can I fix this crack without having it welded or should I even worry about it? Thanks all.

 

JB Weld will work well on aluminum. Repaired a few motorcycle engine side covers with it. As long as it's not leaking, fluids, vacuum, my only concern would be the crack getting worse. Just don't try tightening it anymore if leaking. Aluminum manifolds require lower torque specs than cast which probably overtightening caused this to start with.

i have a F-427 intake on my 428, and it has 3 cracks that have been JBweld repaired. 12 years now and still running strong.
the nice thing is after the repair, you can sand it down and it will disappear.

 

Did you guys just spread the JB Weld on top or did you grind a "v" on the top of the crack then pack it with JBW? Thanks

 

V notched it, packed it in, and let it set for 48 hours before smoothing it.
i also have an intake that had a carb mounting bolt boss snapped clean off that was repaired with JB weld on a 351M. you can't tell that one was done either
