Power Steering Flush

Never tried to do this myself, 2004 Escape V6. I've read to use a turkey baster to remove fluid from reservoir, refill, turn wheel from lock to lock a few times, then repeat. What fluid should I use? Manual says Mercon ATF, since they discontinued this, should I use Mercon V, or generic Mercon? Thanks for any advice, gonna save $100 on this one.

I just did the turkey baster method at refill times 1. I am going to suck and refill next monday. I used on quart (same bottle) for my 07 corolla and 02 escape. Both use DEXIII/Mercon so i bought a quart of Dex/mercon and use it, I think mobil 1 syntetic atf

Mercon V or M1 ATF works good.. that's what I've used in ours for over 50k. I do 30k flushes and add in a ounce of LubeGuard Red.

Thanks

I was a little worried about mixing fluids if I don't flush out all the old, but I don't want to pay to have the fluid flushed either.

Mixing Mercon and Mercon V won't be a problem. When they first started making Merc V years ago alot of people had problems not the case anymore. Just do 3-4 suck and refills of the reservoir should be good enough.. if want to go the whole nine yards add a filter on it.

Thanks

Would Mercon V work any better than Mercon for power steering fluid?

Best method is to disconnect the return line (route to a collection container), block the tank nipple, have a helper turn steering lock to lock/engine running as you replenish the fluid in the PS pump.
