Beefy gauge wires and relays to handle the increased wattage of the bulbs. It can be a DIY with local parts.

Basically it is heavier gage wire with relays that will handle more current to the bulbs.

Yes you can make a DIY kit, but the GOS harness is pre-assembled with protective rubber sheathing, heavy duty relays and connections pre-crimped. Not to mention the headlight connectors to plug directly into the 9007 bulbs. It's very well constructed and there's no way I could get the parts for $56 plus the time it would take me to put it all together. Well worth the price if you ask me.

Headlight wiring these days are only just heavy enough to carry the load and no more.
I've been so fed up with weak headlights in the past that I've made my own harnesses out of 10g wiring and it makes a big difference.
Try and plug in higher wattage bulbs to the factory harnesses and burned out the ground terminal on the plug.
That sent me on a quest to find something better.
What I would like to see is something that will accept the old style H-4 bulb, they have a large terminal on the rear of the bulb and no plastic plug.

So to upgrade from my clouded 2000 head lights, to a 02-04 clear set up, all i need is the shell? I heard I might need adjusters too. I will change bulbs with the shells, and am going to buy the harness. I never know if my head lights are on unless i see their reflection on the cars in front of me. Very little noticible difference with them on vs off at night. Not good.

I upgraded to the 02-04 headlights from clouded stock lamps. It was a real noticable increase in brightness. My old ones sound like they were as bad as yours. I also upgraded the wiring harness with relays directly off the starter solenoid next to the passenger side battery.

Do you have Daytime Running Lights? I do and by using a third relay I was able to keep them. If you use the aftermarket harness it does not accomidate the DRL system. I can send you the wiring diagram that I made up (it is pretty ugly!).

I used cheap light units from ebay, which came with the adjusters. Be sure to get new metal clips that retain the headlight adjuster in the front panel. The hardest part of the headlight replacement is collapsing the bottom adjusting nut in the front panel. A proper size socket pushed over the nut from the inside will squeeze it down enough to pop out. The 02 headlights are plug and play with the stock harness and structure.

kirkharrod, what harness did you get from susquehanna? I looked on their website and found some nice bulbs but couldn't figure out what harness I would need.
