73 f 100 3g alternator problem

Just bought a73 f 100 302 c4 all stock accept for a set of heli 55watt headlight s and a 3g alternator from a 98 merc sable.
Problem is it won't charge higher than 12.5-12.6 with the battery hooked up if I unhook the battery the voltage jumps to 14. I have changed batterys and alternators and still not been able to figure it out. Everything is hooked up right as far as all the diagrams I have found about it. One said I needed a 560 ohm resistor to excite the alternator but I don't know where to get one.

I have already done that and didn't find much other than normal trouble shooting stuff. I've already done everything I can think of other than adding a resistor to make it excite

Never unhook the battery of a running vehicle.

How did you connect the 'I' terminal of the alternator?
