I was curious what ever one carrys to get thru winter in their area of the country. Here in eastern washington it can get to the below frezzing temp. Ice is our bigger problem although we do get snow it usually don't last more than 2 weeks at a time. On occasoin it is worse, get artic express's, go north, east or west 50 miles and it is lots of snow, meausred in ft.wind chills are horrible here. The Cascade Mtn.s and Blue Mtns. are unpredictable and I am always crossing them.
I carry the following items. High lift jack, full set of tools SAE.&metric, sockets and end wrenches, 12v. air compressor, spare serpantine belts, road flares, hatchet, insulated coveralls, gloves, stocking hat, ski googles, spare blankets,anti-freeze, 2 flashlights,cb radio, hot packs, water bottles, energy bars, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, folding pruning saw, extra fuses and electric wire, duct. tape, 20' 3/8" transport chain, tire chains for all 4 wheels,(only used pulling other out of ditch so far)clevis's, small rope. extra fuel tank, I hav'nt installed my winch yet but hope too before winter, and plan on carring some anti-gel for diesel eng. have to do more research first. So how about you guys, and what area do you live.
Hope to make this a good post for all, on what to expect and how to be prepared.Hopefully with your help for all of the US. and Canada.

I just carry a tow strap so I can pull people out that drive like fools lol. Here in northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area the people go totally stupid if we get an inch of snow lol. I grew up in northwest Ohio and can handle snow.

I carry about the same amount of stuff (highlighted). Only changes: I have a bottle of power service(antigel), a 120k lb tow strap, couple of shovels, insulated packs (boots), first aid kit and only carry one set of tire chains. I use to carry two, but the only time I chained up all 4 was when I was doing some serious trail breaking in the mountains, even then I probably could have just used the fronts and made it.
It is not hard to get all that stuff in my tool box. I keep all the clothing and supplies behind the back seat and all the other crap in the tool box. 90% of the stuff is in there year round anyway.
I'm originally from Alaska so it definately matters on driving conditions. I learned to drive on black ice so its nothing new.
During the winter I like to have a tow strap or 2, a shovel, a 50 lb bag of "playground sand" from home depot(4x4)
if i'm rolling with a 2wd truck i'll throw about 250-300 lbs of the playground sand on my rear axle with the shovel and tow straps.
I'll try to buy studded tires if the budget permits. If not I just drive slower.
If youre driving a carb'd truck definately carrry a can of ether. Spray in in the carb before start up and you might be able to get to work in the morn.
If youre completely retarded and absolutely can't figure out sliding your Ford around on ice the carry some carpet samples. Put them in front of your stuck drive wheels and you'll get out.
Trust me, I grew up the hard way. No friends with recovery vehicles for me. I've been my own AAA since i was 16.

I just make sure My rigs are properly maintained, before winter hits.
Then I just drive. I don't carry anything special. Usually I'm dressed well enough that if something does happen, I won't have any problems staying warm if I have to sit it out, or walk out.

I gotta have an extended cab to carry all the stuff. I keep the 18V dewalt kit in the truck (sawzall, drill and a snake light). For some reason I have a propane torch (came in handy working on a snowmobile once). A first aid kit and fire extinguisher. Spare fuel filter (diesel).
I have used Blizzaks in the winter for many years now. Well worth the investment for the peace of mind.
