ArtsBest is starting off with a positive reputation.
Overheating no heater

My car overheats then backs off to a normal temp. All the while the heater blows cold air then hot. Water pump is new and thermostat is one yr old. This has to be a thermostat problem does it not?

Either that or you have an air pocket in the cooling system.

HomerWinzlow is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Blown head gasget can do that too. That was the first thing I saw when we would get a Windstar in with a 3.8 V6. Combustion gas filling the cooling system and antifreeze blowing out the exhaust. Air fills the heater core and you get no heat.

You could just have a leak somewhere though with similar results. Check the heater core for leaking, radiator and all hoses. Take it to a repair shop and have it pressure tested. If they find no leaks its time to have a hydrocarbon analysis done for headgasget leakage.
