I'll take the instand power of fthe line my gasser makes with a good gear for stop and go city driving. No time for a turbo to spool up, that idiot in the other lane is already long gone by then. In a city like chicgao, espcecially driving around downtown, you really need the instant power a gasser gives you off the line if you wanna get somewhere quickly.
Oh and I have heat quickly in the winter, and the winter is what I bought my truck for for the most part. V10 takes the win in these catagories in my opinion.

Ok, If Joe at tricktuners.com has adjusted my trip computer correctly, It hasn't dropped below 15 since the turbo install on my V10. On a 50 mile trip to my parents house It will easily climb to 17+. I know they are called Lie-O-Meters but just watching my fuel gauge from 1/2 tank I can get over 150 on 1/4 tank now. If I ever get back to work I will fill it up and hand calculate it. My tuner Joe said the Cobra injectors are a lot more eficient with atomizing the fuel for better combustion. Just my .02 that the V10's really love the help of a Turbo.
Joe should know how to do this-it's not very difficult.
Turbochargers are a nice addition, and you're just a couple of steps ahead of me on your Excursion.
JL
Who in the Wide World of Excursions told you that garbage?
Umm, I believe that was called sarcasm.

These types of threads always bring a grin to my face...
When I was looking used for my Ex in October of 2005 I had two choices...the V10 and a 6.0h...at the time they were asking $10,000 more for the 6.0h...I simply couldn't justify the extra outlay of cash on a vehicle that would only be used for tow and snow duty.
I tow a 9000# 35' hitch to bumper travel tralier...I have been all over the country and thru the Rockies twice with this little ole gasser...I have pulled 5 mile long 6% grades at 8000' elevation at 70mph rolling at 17,000#'s combined...
The ONLY place I found I had to slow down was when I get over 8500' in elevation...and when I was pulling Vail and Loveland passes in Colorado on I-70 I could only muster 55mph...the funny thing...EVERYONE else around me in their cars that weren't pulling anything...they too were running 55mph!...most of the big rigs with 1200ft-lbs of torque and turbos were running 25-30mph with flashers on?
My point is that I haven't found a spot in the US yet that I was underpowered at 17,000#'s combined...
Now if I were pulling 15,000#'s like young nick...well that trailer should only be pulled by a diesel...and IMO only an F450 like his dad has now...as the diesel in the F450 IS the right tool for that job...but people pulling 10,000# trailers with 650ft-lb torque monsters aren't even tapping the beginnings of the power in those motors...why leave 30-50% of the power untapped?
Even when I pulled Vail and Loveland (10,600' and 11,200' respectively) with my normally aspirated motor...since I don't live in Colorado...and I only occasionally pass thru that area...I'll deal with 55mph versus 70mph for those rare occasions...
I'm with the poster that points out that you are FREE TO NOT READ posts you don't like...heck if I clicked on all the posts that I know would tick me off...I'd be on here all day...instead I utilize my brain and selectively censor the posts that don't interest me...but I haven't been sucking diesel fumes for too long either which would have likely caused the brain damage that others are suffering from
As far as mpgs...I've talked to enough people in campgrounds around campfires to know that the urban legands of the diesel mpgs reported on here are just that...first liar don't stand a chance...I'll take my hand calculated 8mpg TOWING average to a diesels 9-11 any day...I'd have to tow a lot of miles to make up $10,000 at that rate...especially given the fact that diesel has been mostly higher priced than 87 octane for some time now...
The days of the old underpowered 7.3L or low output cummins getting HIGH mpgs are gone with todays high powered diesels especially with the DPF's and all the emission restrictions gassers have had to deal with since the early 70's...emission regulation really puts a damper on mpgs...plain an simple...the new 6.4L PSD is proof positive that diesels don't always get good mpgs...
I've got a buddy of mine with an F350 dually pulling a lighter 5th wheel than Nick's dad and he regurlarly gets 8mpgs with his 6.4L...he has no reason to fib to me...and he is somewhat upset by the cruddy mpgs too...
NICK...question for you...when your dad is pulling that 15,000# TH with that F450...what type of mpgs do you guys get?...come on be honest now...I bet you spend lots of time at that green handled pump!
Joe.

A grin of envy, born from not owning THE AWESOME, POWERFUL, 100MPG 7.3L PSD like me, eh buddy?

Hey now, I've done the CCV mod, I don't suck fumes anymore!!

That's right about what I get towing my 31' TT with the Ex, brother. I've never gotten as low as 9mpg, but I have gotten as high as 12mpg, but that was with not too many hills.

Once Nick bolts on the DPF delete and downloads his Spartan tune, that MPG will go up and so will his power. The power being unleashed in those 6.4's by the JUST a custom tune is AMAZING!

Yeah but my Excursion cost me 200 dollars more than the same year V-10 with nearly the same miles. I get 32mpg's not towing and 20 mpg's while towing my 11K hauler! Try that in a V-10. I can pull a 10% grade at 90 mph no problem! My oil changes at the dealer only cost $15 dollars, and fuel filters are 99 cents! Why would you drive a V-10?? I can go 40K miles between oil changes and 50K miles between fuel filter changes!
I love these threads!

What did we get going up to Oregon a whopping 6 MPG Ask Stewart we could not pass a gas station for real lol but in defense now knowing what I do now I am surprised the truck moved because of the 100% filled DPF and CAT as it says in the service report. Now on the way home from Oregon with the DPF/CAT gone and a Spartan 40 Hp tune we got an average of 12 to 13 HAND Calculated but that was with a good amount of down hill but we still did have the 4 or 5 good sized up hill climbs. The lie O meter was saying 15 MPG Now with me driving to school it's getting a solid 16 HAND Calculated not the 19 the Lie o meter say wished it was that but for a 450 with 4:30 rear end I am not complaining but the power on the 275 Holly Smokes!! Its hard to keep it straight with the pedal to the floor and in the rain its down right scary. I had to take it down to the 150 in the rain just so I would not keep spinning the tires when leaving the stop light. That throttle is touchy lol.
O and now I get to tow the Toy Hauler . On our trip back from Oregon we ripped a I/C boot and was on the side of the road for about 6 hours while waiting for a replacement part the Clay at Riffraff Diesel Performance delivered to me But my dad does not do good at driving late cause he is not a night owl so I got to drive from 9 Pm to 2 Am It was so bad @$$.

Boy, it sounds like that diesel sure is a pain in the butt and more trouble than it is worth. Who would want to have to spend time waiting for things like IC boots and dealing with crummy mileage and power with a plugged exhaust. Sounds like you should have gotten the V10.
