Hey - so I did the research and chose a V10. Tows my 30ft Sea Ray just fine - and doesn't blow head gaskets... it does however idle quietly and doesn't smell....
Probably a good time to step away from the computer BEFORE you type something just to get people riled up. I'm sure you've been perfectly happy with all of your automotive purchases and never modded or changed one of them in the quest for more performance or mileage or...
Ah... back to the frosty beverage...
Fixed that for ya. I think that's what you meant to type.

Remember the turbos...diesels suck MORE wind AND blow more smoke.
HA HA! Ya got me there! I like to blow smoke, as you saw in my post!!
Hey, in all seriousness, I really can't dog the V-10's they are ok for what they are designed for. I just had lots of gas motors for so many years and towing with a diesel really is better!! These debates just go round and round, so I try to add some humor to lighten up the atmosphere!

scottman70,
It's all in good fun--at least for some of us. I'll deny it if you tell anyone but I'm a closet diesel lover. We always wanted a diesel Ex and planned to buy one but when I purchased my Ex in 2005, we were in Colorado on our way moving to Alaska. Our vehicle pooped out pulling a 4K pound trailer through the mountains, so we were forced to stop in Durango to buy the Excursion a couple years earlier than planned. The only ones in town were a used V-10 @ $30 grand and 2 new diesels at $53 grand, all 3 identical except for the motor. With a broken car, single income, 4 kids, & no time or vehicle to shop the nearby towns, we had to go with the used gasser. It's been very good to me and I like it, but I would have bought a diesel had our circumstances allowed it.
Think I'll go suck some more gas...

Wow that stinks! I don't envy you being in that situation! That would suck having to buy a tow rig in that situation! I have been broken down while on a trip before and it's no fun! Don't tell anyone, but it was last summer and it was my Diesel Ex! My Cam Position Sensor failed me and I was stuck at Mt. Rushmore for an extra couple of days!! So see, the V-10 does have it's advantages!
I'm not a regular here, but been bouncing around the last few days looking for info on improving my suspension a little bit, but I haven't noticed a plethora of V10 owners complaining about their mileage and performance???
Sorry, but I gotta tell you that I had a choice, and I chose my V10.
I routinely get 12 mpg, unless I'm towing, then it drops to 10 (8 in the hills). And towing at 60-65 on our two-lane highways, and 75 on the interstate (when I was in the lower 48) was plenty fast enough (even in the mountains).
It pulls with almost as much power as my old Cummins 24v, and maintenance costs aren't near as high. I did TCO calculations a few years back (when diesel fuel was CHEAPER than gas), and factoring in higher cost of oil changes, fuel filters, etc, I figured break even point for the higher cost of a diesel was around 110k.
Now, factor in much worse cold weather performance (like it took my Cummins the entire 30 minute drive home to get the heater warm at -10), and I prefer my V10.
Plus, [puts on Nomex suit] I am not a big fan of the Ford diesel.
Therefore, count me as one absolutely freakin overjoyed, dancin-in-the-streets, pitying-the-PSD-owner-with-the-compensation-issues, SATISFIED "Wee-10" owner.
well having a gasser in Alaska has benefits too. no frozen or gelled fuel and u don't have to buy addititve all year. do they have # 3 or 4 diesel up there? Keep in mind that fuel economy drops on the diesel as the Blend number increases too...

I frankly take some exception to the thought that I didn't "buck up" the cash, or get what I "really" wanted. I wanted a V10 and got it. It's wrong to assume all that V10 owners simply cheaped out...and really wanted a diesel to start with.
Nah, don't get upset. The OP never singled you out, nor did he say all V10 owners. No need to let it get personal for ya.

True, true! I've seen some claims that made me laugh!
It's all about personal preference.
If California wasn't so stupid about CARB certs, and I knew I Jeff could set me up with a turbo, I'd be a proud owner of a V10!

Ouch! That's a no-brainer decision!

hey Stewart did your Ex come with the 4:30 gears? My newly aquired 03 F250 V10 has 3:73's with an LSD, while I know the power of the V10 can compensate the gearing, it would have been nice to get a better ratio. MAybe i can find a wrecked EX somewhere and pick up the axles and do a swap??

It's #1 in the winter.
They're actually studying the North Slope fleet (historically Ford PSDs) and switching a lot of them to gas V10s. Started because they couldn't buy PSDs for a few years (didn't have the ULSD up there so couldn't run the 07 and newer engines). People are realizing that with the degraded fuel economy of the newer fuel/engines (we saw a 10% decrease in economy), comparatively poorer cold weather performance, etc, that there's not as much reason to use diesel engines up there as there used to be (can't make our own fuel like we used to).

It came with the 4.30s. I guess I got lucky because at the time I bought it, I didn't know much about gearing and the options for the Ex. Try Northwest Auto Parts (a salvage yard) in Anchorage. I was just there today and they have 2 Excursions that haven't even been stripped yet.

Thanks for the info. I've delt with Northwest before, they think everything there is made of GOLD or something. Tried to sell me a DENTED/tweaked bumper for my last truck for close to the same price the dealer wanted for a NEW one.........I laughed at them and have NOT been back since.
