Quick Question about the OEM Oil Filter

OK, I did the first Oil change on my truck and I discovered that the oil filter was not the normal Motorcraft filter, but some other brand that had NO mention of Ford or Motorcraft on it. If that was not bad enough it was put on by a gorilla and a PITA to get off. I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

Have read & heard a lot about this issue recently and I will soon find out for myself, as my 09 will soon get its first oil change. Gonna take it to the dealer since the first change is FREE, and let them deal with it. After that, I will always do my own changes

yeah, it's different and requires a different filter cap socket than the Motorcraft filter.

My dealer is also doing the first change free so I'm glad I don't have to screw with the tight one from the factory

I noticed the end cap on the factory oil filter was different, but didn't pay attention to the brand name on it.

Here's a couple of shots.

Factory install on left, Motorcraft FL-820S on right in both shots.

Note the number of flutes on factory as others have mentioned. The Moto FL-820S has 36, so if you bought the tool you would only be able to use on your new filters not the original. Both are the same dia. though. BTW, I think the factory original may be made by Champion, but still looking into that to confirm. Not Motorcraft for sure.

I wonder if Ford is changing vendors for filters again. The one that came on the truck originally looked like it could have been a Fram or Wix or something.

I think it is the kind of item that may have different sources/vendors at different times. It is a standard ubiquitous part that can be had from many places, depending on price etc etc.

It is a good way to get an upper body workout espically if you have a 4x4

Yeah that was another thing as I did not have the end filter attachment, but the one that looks like a claw and it kept on getting in the way.....
