Some progress.

I removed and tore down my 9 inch today. Removed everything from the case. Cut the spring perches off and smoothed the axle tubes. The case, carrier and pinion support are ready for powder coating.

I ordered Strange engineering 31 spline axles, 31 spline Detroit Trutrac and the Wilwood brake kit 140-7139, 4 piston caliper with a 12 inch rotor. I also ordered American Muscle Bullit sport wheels and Nitto Invo tires.

In a couple weeks I should have a high performance rear end. (On the truck at least.)

Pictures to follow when the unit is assembled. I will probably farm out installing the Trutrac as I don't have the skill or tools necessary to complete the job properly.

sounds like that is going to be awesome. what gear ratio are you going to use?
what engine/tranny is it behind?

Counting 13 teeth on the pinion and 39 teeth on the ring, I currently have a gear ratio of 3:1. I will probably keep that because I am not building a drag truck and that will go well with the gear vendors over/under drive at some later date.

Right now I have a 289 with a C4. This engine was in the truck when I bought it. I am torn between building it or the 460 and C6 I have on a roll away under my work bench.

The 289 weighs 460#. The 460 weighs 720#. The old Y-block weighed 610#.

On the 289, if I put aluminum heads, a hotter cam, I already have an Edelbrock performer manifold and Holley 4bbl, and headers I can get the weight down some and the power up some. Fuel mileage might not be too bad. Right now it gets 16 mpg on the highway cruising at 65.

Then again there's no substitute for cubic inches and with aluminum heads and headers and an aluminum intake I can get the 460 weight down considerrably less than the Y-block it originally had in it.

Got the powder coated parts back last Wed. and got sick immediately. They look good though. Dropped off the Trutrac, carrier, pinion support, ring and pinion to get replaced today. Should be done by Tuesday next week. The dude doing it is in high demand and very busy this time of year.

I will post pics of the re-assembly under a new topic heading next week when I am finished.

Meanwhile, I will have a 1965 Ford equivalent of the posi unit in 28 splines with 5X5.5 - 30 1/16 inch axles, drum brakes with backing plates, Leaf spring hangers, springs, crossmember for rear shock mounting and bottom plates/shock mounts for 9".

If anyone needs any of them, let me know.

Nice to be making progress, good for you!

I recently picked up a Traction Lock 3rd member for my 9" that I hope to install soon. I guess I should go ahead and replace the clutch plates in it before I put it in truck. I'm looking forward to it as I'll be able to drive on the highway now. The new 3rd member has 2.75 gears.

Can't wait to see the pics
Bobby

Progress halted.

Strange axles have lug bolts that thread through the axle flanges. They also include some washers with the lug bolts that must go between the head of the bolt and the flange. The problem is that the washers are 1/8 inch thick and make the head of the bolt protrude so far into the Wilwood brake backing plate that they rub on the springs for the internal parking brake.

I discovered this Saturday morning after torquing the bolts with red Loc-tite per the instructions on Friday evening. Strange is not open on weekends so, work halts while I await an e-mail response from them as to whether I can use a thinner washer or not.
