Exhaust leak fixed

I have had this horrible exhaust sound since I got my truck (two years ago). I replaced the up-pipes because I could see they were leaking. Still the noise persisted. With the help of several members (Stewart_H, 4inchlovin, weekendwarriorfsw32) we noticed that soot was coming from what looked like the back of the turbo area. Upon closer inspection we noticed that there was soot around where the EBPV housing bolts to the turbo. I replaced the turbo with a van turbo with a high flow outlet. Still the noise persisted. At a previous NW tech day, Clay of Riffraff Diesel went for a ride in my truck and did some poking around under the hood. The only exhaust component left was the manifolds. Clay sent out an extra set he had to be machined flat and then ceramic coated. They were installed at this last weekend's NW tech day. The horrible sound is gone. EGTs are down. Turbo spools up nice and fast (even for a van turbo).

Driver's side old manifold:

Passenger side old manifold:

Notice the soot:

Old next to new:

In spite of what you might think, instillation was pretty easy. Jack up the front end. Place jackstands. Remove both wheels. Remove both fender liners. Remove both manifolds. Instillation is the reverse of removal. Thanks to Nick and Mark for the assistance and a huge thanks to Clay at Riffraff Diesel Performance http://www.riffraffdiesel.com for making this happen!

Great pics Peter, thought the chances of those leaking were minimal, seen it first hand now, props to the guys for the help.

Was there any signs of soot on the block? I think this is the first I've ever read of this? Rebuilt motor? How many miles?

There was not much physical evidence prior to pulling them mostly because its so hard to see in there. As far as the motor its the orignal with 196K on it. I will say on both sides the 3 bolts closest to the up-pipes were not as tight as the others. Not loose but not as tight.

The reason I asked is those bolts tend to seize up pretty quick due to the thermal shock (heat cycles). In my experience, loose bolts in an exhaust manifold are pretty rare, but not machining a surface or adding a gasket after a rebuild can easily cause a leak. Wonder if that motor has been that way from day one? Something to file away in the back of the mind for future reference.

Again, I have only had this truck for 2 years. I can't really speak for what happened to it prior to me owning it. I have seen the Oasis report. The only things done during the warranty period was a new turbo and some A/C work. I know the EBPS tube and sensor were replaced by the lot where I bought it before I got it but I would hope they didn't remove the manifolds to do that. But with some shops you never know.

How did I miss this thread??

EXCELLENT pictures, Pete. It's unbelievable how badly those things were leaking! Look at the soot on those puppies...wow!

I tried to rep you Pete, but I still gotta spread it around!

Now I gotta go take a closer look at the manifolds on my Ex and my F250.

Absolutely. EGTs are way down. Turbo spools a lot quicker. Truck feels way stronger.
