starter problems on 78 ford f250

I have a 1978 fordF250.We put a 1971 460 out of a Lincoln. The truck originally had a 351 mod.in it It still has original 4speed manual transmission in it.the starter is making a grinding sound when i try to start it. What starter will work for this application.Any info.will be greatly appreciated.

well for starters I would look for a starter that fits a 1971 460, You should crawl under your truck and inspect the ring gear that the starter engages on, it could have worn teeth, also the starter gear teeth could be worn also, take the starter to a auto supply store and have it tested for free, good luck

The starter "gear teeth" are part of the starter drive, a replaceable part.

What flywheel was used with this swap? The A/T flexplate from the Lincoln or the M/T flywheel from the 351M?

I have no idea what flywheel/flexplate was used, that why I asked the question.

What was the first year the 460 was available with a M/T?

1983, in F250/350's only. No passenger car with a 460 was available with a M/T.

No 1973/79 F100/350 w/a 460 was available with a M/T either. The 460 was not available in 1980/82 F100/350's, Econolines only.

No 460's were available after 1979 in F100/150's.
