351 motor

I am considering the purchase of an 87 F-350 with a 351 ? motor and 5 speed I think, the engine is not the original in that it is an 89, seems to run ok, I can get the truck DIRT cheap and it has a flatbed on the back which is what I am looking for. How do I tell wether the motor is a winndsor, cleveland, boat anchor ect ect ect. I am more after the bed I guess but if its got a decent motor in it than I will also use that. I dont know what the motor come out of, it looks like it has always been there with all the crap hooked up to it. I know nothing abou these ford trucks so any help on this to steer me clear or purchase would be greatly appreciated, just dont want to buy a motor that has a bad reputation. It will prob. eventually find its way in my big truck. It clearly says on the aluminum intake 5.9 liter if that helps, Thanks

Do you mean 5.8 litre? Is it fuel injected? Does it start and run ok? No smoke? Idles ok? How many miles on it? Sounds like a keeper to me...
Scroll down to the small-block forum and ask around..I think you have one of the pre-roller cam 351 windsor engines...but that's just a guess...a good guess but still only a guess. LoL! Good Luck!

Look at the number of valve cover bolts. W=6, C and M=8. Difference between C and M is the 1 inch rise on the M's block where the distributor goes in.

No 351C or M came from the factory with EFI. The 351W was the last one standing of the 3, and when everything went to metric, it was then called 5.8L. However, looking at any old tag on the valve cover of the 351M/400 will show a 5.8L also, but it will still say 351M/400.

But what do I know?

Thanks alot, went with a different truck tonight after all anyway, got a real nice flatbed on it and for what I paid for the whole truck I could not have built the bed for. Supposedely a rebuit motor, defanitely looks like it just looking at it, no drips and fresh paint top to bottom.
Like I had mentioned ford are new to me but I think it is a 351 Windsor, I am thinking it has 6 bolts on the valve cover, I forgot to count when I was there but I am looking at the picture that is online for the truck and I see three on the bottom so I am thinking it has 6 per side total. Its in a 68 F-350 Dually.
I just noticed that I had posted this same question about how to tell the difference a few weeks ago and got alot of great responses so sorry to anyone that I have upset, I had just forgot that I had posted the questin already in the heat of the moment.
Thanks Havi for your response also though.

Can anyone tell me if it would be a fairly direct swap ( motor mounts concerned )between the 351 and 302, I am thinking of putting this 302 into the 68 and trying to get at least a return on my money spent for the truck and taking the motor out of the 68 which is a 351 Windsor and putting it into the 52 F-7 which I have already fabricated mounts for ect. I am wondering if the manifolds are the same beween 302 and 351, I just barely got the stock exhaust manifolds of the 302 into this F-7. Thanks.
