Do you guys no if there's any tricks to installing a carrier bearing or a steady bearing.. whatever you want to call it ! Is it a pretty straight forward install ?? Also I have a 4" lift. What kind of a shim do I need to put in it ??

I know they have to be pressed out, the old bearing, sorry I can't be of more assistance, had mine done at a shop.

 

Yup they do have to get pressed out ! Found that out ! Going to pull the drive shaft when I get back home and take it in to a shop to get pressed on and off !

 

I just had bought a shim kit, it states to install a 1/4" shim for every inch of lift.. I belive the shim kit cost me 30 bucks,
I had a shimmy at take off this is what they said would help that problem, also knows as axel wrap, due to the high tourqe of the diesel.

I changed mine about 3 weeks ago. Did not have to get it pressed off, I used a big gear puller, and it slid off. I did have a problem getting the nut off it is either IIRC 2 and 3/16 or 33mm a 1/2 " impact could not budge it so I took it in and they used a 3/4 " impact to get it off. Yours should be easier than mine ....less milage. 228k now

Think the quarter inch thing is right. Mine came with a two inch square tube. Installed it and no more vibration taking off.

 

So I can use anything to space that down the appropriate amount then ???? ie piece of alluminum or steel ????

 

yeah! It's just two bolts that hold it on. Get you a quarter inch piece of steel plate and cut it out in a rectangle to match the top of your carrier bearing. Drill a couple holes and your done. Only thing is you might have to get longer bolts and mine came with grade 8 bolts which I wouldn't use anything else.

If you can't get it pulled off, you can also CAREFULLY cut it off with a cutting wheel, and CAREFULLY beat the new one on. But like the others said, it should be done by a shop.

 

Another note: be sure to lube the splines on the shafts really well, this will help in the drive line thump when starting and stopping.
PS The service call it a support bearing, the differential have carrier bearings I think.
