GM 5.0LTBI Vs. Ford 5.0LMPI
I'm curious on what people's opinions and facts are on this matter. I have people telling me that the 305 is a far-better engine, but I don't buy it. Here are some facts.
1985 5.0L MPI 185hp and 270ft/lbs of torque
1992 195hp and 270ft/lbs of torque
1994 205hp and 275ft/lbs of torque
GM
1987 5.0L TBI 175hp and 270ft/lbs of torque
1996 5.0L vortec 220hp and 285ft/lbs of torque
In 1994(5) the 302 had 5 MORE hp than the 5.7L TBI
So what makes the 5.0L 305 a better engine? I've driven several, and it surely isn't a better engine.

It's only people like this guy fordsajoke, that don't know any betterthere isn't a 5.0305 in stock form ever going to outrun a 5.0 302 in stock form and if they are modified equally the 302 will always outrun the 305 chevy has long since stopped trying to run the 305 against the 302 they just can't catch it so now they're using a 5.7 350 to outrun a little 302 well how about putting the lightning engine in a mustang and see if chevy has ANYTHING for it...... I really doubt it. John

I'm new to this board, so this is kind of a late reply, but having had both engines over a decade of just picking up good used work trucks to wear out, I've found the 305 to be torquey, fairly durable, but very asthmatic. The 302s are strong pullers, very durable, usually oilburners, but keep their power at high mileage. I don't know what your purpose is for the engine, but for my money, I would get a Ford with a 4.9/300 and M5OD. They have power almost identical to the 305s, and will outlast them 2 to 1, just learn to shift easy, because the M5ODhas good gears, but wimpy synchronizers. These rigs will consistently go 200,000 mi. If you want a Chevy skip the 305, which I think is an engine with no reason for existance, and get a 350 automatic, they have a powerband wider and stronger than the 305, and get the same gas mileage.

i like ford and all but one thing about the 305 is that it is one of the best sounding small v-8s ive ever heard and i have heard about all of them. maybe im wrong but my buddy use to have a 305 and it would kick any or comparible motors @$$ in sound but maybe not power just my opinion though

Don't get me wrong, I am a ford man, but I like the 1970 chevelle. I know! I KNOW! SORRY!
Anyway,
My parents have a 1986 Pontiac Parisienne Brougham.
Just turned 275,000 kms. Still runs good after we tuned the carb. The body/frame is falling apart though. (never been undercoated)
Its got the 305, and still has lots of power...
It is pretty much a lowered 1/2 ton truck with coils though, so thats probably why its still around.
We can't kill it either, but my 1978 Ford will last forever, and without the frame cracks showing on this car.
Its a good car, but its not a ford truck!
Never had a 302, driven an '87 4x4 with an automatic and 31's but it was gutless...but compared to my granny 4 speed, any auto not behind a big block would feel that way.
I do know that 350's suck in trucks!
