1966 f100 power steering wheels go oppisite way???

We mounted a 1978 or so power steering box on my 66 when steering wheel is turned it goes the wrong way. we took pitman arm off of bottom of box and rotated it 180 degrees (on bottom of box) it makes sense don't know how to fix any ideas?

Post the number off of it, Bill da dummy can tell for sure, but it sounds to me like you have a 80 or newer in front of the axle gear rather than a behind the axle 79 down.

Did it come off a ford? I think the international steering boxes will bolt up , but are opposite like what your saying.

Thanks, Mr. jowilker and Billw for replying. The numbers are; on the side of the box, RFD6TW3550AA. Top of box on a tag, SPA76B20. A number where the slack is adjusted is; C6AR3580-A2 What i seem to need is a steering box with has the pitman pointing to the rear. The one I have supposed to be a 1978-79 was pointing to the front. I used my old pitman rod, rotated it to the rear Thanks.

This box came from a friend, it is a ford. I read some where the box needed to be reworked to function on a older model?????

Dunno about all that, I got mine off of a mid 70s ford and it functions correctly.... or im backwards one. lol. I know of many guys who used these and never had that happen... it seems I do remember someone telling me that the larger trucks like f500 s or whatever used a different box..... either way.. something isnt right...

We'll have to wait on Bill or Don, dummy 2 to chime in for your number decode.

You must have been reading a magazine article about the reworking deal. We get some of those writers stop by here on their way to the top.

RFD6TW3550AA is the ID number for steering gearbox housing only / This housing was used on Bronco's & F100/350's, so this ID number is no help.

C6AR3580A2 is the ID number for the sector shaft cover only / This part was used on cars, trucks, Bronco's, some Econolines, so this ID number is no help either.

This is what's needed: SPA76B20. 76B20 = You copied it down wrong.

SPA is a Ford P/S gearbox from a 1973/79 F100/350 2WD, or 1976/79 F100/250 4WD, or 1979 F350 4WD.

However, the correct suffix pins it down to certain years, 2WD or 4WD.

The number should read like this assuming that the B is correct: SPA-AB, or: -CB, -BN, -BS, -BX, -BY.

You sent me a Visitors Message asking for assistance. I suggested you contact FTE member 75F350, as this fellow is an expert on 4WD P/S conversions.

could the gearbox have been turned beyond the stop while it was off so that it is now 180 degrees off? I don't know if this is possible, though.

Is your '66 a 4x4 or A 4X2?
It appears to me you have installed a 4x2 '70s power steering gearbox on a '66 4x4.
These are not interchangeable.

Banjopicker66 is right, if your truck is a 4x4, you can not use a 2wd box. Myself. I used a P/S box off a 4x4 Toyota on my 66 4x4. It was cheaper and a EZ change over. But that IMHO.
