renting an RV, what mileage to expect?
I'm looking at renting an RV, and I'm trying t0 figure out what mileage I'll get. It'll probably be a V10 E350 C-class, about 26 feet long. It looks like these run a "dry" weight of around 11,000 lbs, and have a gvwr or 14,500 lbs.
I know mileage will be pretty low, but what am I realistically looking at? 5 MPG? 10?

I'm looking at something like this route. With a few side trips thrown in, it should be about 1200 miles (2000km).

my 03 e450 28' class c towing a 29' race car trailer got 6.5 most of the time. I always kept up with traffic and did 65-70. I was just at or a couple hundred pounds under the GCWR. Never used it much empty but I dought 10 is out of the question if you are not in a big hurry or keep i under 65.

If you haven't been there Glacier Parks Going To The Sun Road is a must see. They have tour buses, some are free to ride, that will take you since the RV is too long to go over the top. A lot of country to see in western MT. Glacier/Flathead Lake all the way down through the Butte area and on down to Yellowstone.
If you have time to spend a few days the N Fork of the Coeur d'Alene river in north ID is beautiful country.

We have an 98 Class C on an E-Superduty (Now E-450's) and usually tow.
7.0 - 7.5 MPG is about our usual average running around 18-19k in GCW with speeds no more then 65 mph.
Empty and lightly loaded I have see in the mid 8's. I have never cracked a 9 mpg number.
We have a basement C and it's 31 feet long.

Well I got back last night, and I calculated my mileage this morning.
The RV I was given was a 2009 E450 cutaway C class, about 28 feet long. Never got a chance to weigh it. Drove it over 1300 miles (2100 km), almost all in the mountains, through Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho and Montana. Had it in Tow/Haul mode most of the way to take advantage of the engine braking on the downhills. I'm sure that hurt mileage a little, but it really makes going down those mountain passes effortless. Was impressed with the power of the V10, but it sure had to wind itself up to show all that power. Not sure what transmission the rig had, but it was very eager to drop a gear for the smallest hill. Anyway, it got the job done quite handily. Wound it up to 75 MPH a few times, but mostly kept it to around 60.
I got 7.94 Miles per gallon (29.6 l/100km) overall, which sounds about average for that type of vehicle.
Final route was like this: from:calgary ab to:Longview AB to:Cranbrook BC to:Coeur d'alene ID to:st regis MT to:47.415079,-114.208374 to:MT-35/E Shore Rte to:west glacier mt to:browning mt to:Cardston AB to:Waterton park to:Calgary AB - Google Maps
Some of our favourite things were Farragut state Park and the lovely town of Sandpoint ID.
Unfortunately, many things were closed around West Glacier Montana. I guess the end of September is too late for visiting there. Also ended up fighting very strong winds for our last two days of driving, which is no fun in something that aerodynamic.
thanks for everyone's help on this. We had a great time.
