aluminum 3-53t

anybody ever been around one of these old 2 strokes? found an all aluminum 3-53t (out of a military gama goat) with clutch and everything and it got me to thinking, and i think im gonna make an offer on it. from what i have found online is that they make 120 hp, but wasn't able to find a torque spec.

what would be a good home for this engine? how much weight do you think it could handle? and would it be possible to turn it up high enough for my highboy?

you can get jakes for them too...

Google my man:

Diesel Engine Specs

Note that it weighs 1000 lbs in iron, so what, 750 in pot metal?

131 hp at 2500 rpm, which translates to 275 lb/ft at the same rpm, and my guess is 2500 is about it rpm wise.

Horsepower Design Equations Formulas Calculator - Torque Rotating

And it's a 3 cylinder, so get your lock nuts and Loctite out.

With that rpm range, you will need something like a Ranger or GV OD to have enough gears to get to highway speeds, or install a really tall axle, and suck wind when you shift it and go from redline to idle....

Some discussion of this engine and others, note bellhousing comments:

The aluminum version would be a good score if you had a truck to put it in. Go look on youtube, there's a few Detroit swaps. Only a couple are the aluminum version. Go for it, and buy a cheap F350 to put it in. A Roadranger RT610 would fit in a pickup, and give you 10 speeds. You would just have to have highway gears to use it since it's not overdrive, but they do make an overdrive for it aftermarket, or you can find an actual RTO610.

i have my 73 f250 highboy that i would like to build into a diesel, but i don't really think that the 3cyl would have enough in it to make up for even the 360 (maybe if it was a 6v53).

and i hate overdrives, its makes much more sense to run a lower 1st gear (like with the 10 speed) and a higher gear in the rear.

A bone stock 3-53, maybe not. There's a lot of stuff you can do to em to crank out some power. At 130hp, it would feel close in power to the 360. Add bigger injectors and turbo.....happy drivin!

a 3-53T would move a 73 highboy pretty good with a 4 or 5 speed trans.
search you tube. there is a fellow with a non turbo 3-53 in a mid 60's chevy that runs and sounds awesome.

I believe that the 3-53T has a turbo (isn't that what the 'T' stands for)?

101 hp/189 lb/ft at 2800 rpm....a 300 six would be like a pro-stocker compared to that....

But...a 300 doesn't sound like a 3-53! Adding power is easy

you got me on that!
That's what I'm afraid of with my 4BT swap. Noise and vibes, when I'm used to a smoooth 300.

Big 4 cylinder = big vibes, up and down at 2x crank speed, iirc.

Get the lock washers out....

With luck, your gearing will put it at a running speed that doesn't harmonize with some other vibration. Your teeth could need to be cross-bolted to hold your fillings....
