6 friggin second clip and my internet connection isn't fast enough to play the whole thing without having to pause half way through to finish downloading it.
From the video, it would seem that tuning is what causes the "new diesel sound" since the demo motor can make both sounds. Makes you wonder what else is possible with tuning on that new motor. As soon as you get around to hitting the lotto, we can drop a 6.7 in your Ex and see what it can do.
The same clip is on fords website. They explain that it has to deal with multiple stages of the direct injection that allows them to make it quieter.
Yes, but that's all controlled by tuning and control of the injection cycle. With that much control available, the tuning guys ought to have lots of fun if they can get around the EPA stuff.
nuthin' special, just pilot injection. As I understand it, it's the same Bosch system G.M. has used for years. Let's hope it doesn't have the injector issues the LB7 engine does...

The way I understand it, it's a very similar setup to the common-rail system on the 6.4s. Spartan now has a tune to get 660 HP out of a stock engine...

I guess 660 for an off the shelf unit isn't bad.
I'm sure those guys are chomping at the bit to get a hold of a 6.7 to see what they can do with it. The reduced lag from the airflow redesign should help get that HP to the rear wheels quicker. I guess we'll soon find out if there are any weak points in the new motor.
To be honest, I don't see the 6.7 handling the brutal abuse the 6.4L seems to under aggressive tuning. I think the aluminum heads are a sign of that.
That being said I have nothing against Aluminum heads. Ford has to design an engine to operate within specified operating parameters. They shouldn't have to design an engine around extreme mods someone might make to it. I expect it to be a very dependable workhorse for those of us who like to keep things stock or nearly stock, but I think radically tweaking the PCM might be catastrophic.
Of course, I could be wrong, and this thing could be bulletproof. Time will tell...

There will always be a way. The 7.3 switched to PMR's at the end and that was the weak link, then the head bolts on the 6.0 were a weak link, next, well we'll find out. There has never been a shortage of folks willing to blow up their motor to determine what the limits are. Let them blow a few up, then step back to a safe setting and hold on.
Its just pilot injection like it has been said. All the new diesels, be it cummins, duramax or the new PSD are quiet like the "new diesel" sound. They are all common rail injection systems. The Duramax and Cummins use a Bosch CP3 based system, while the 6.4 uses a Siemens injection system. The new 6.7 PSD will use an updated Bosch CP3

Needs a lot of work, including some rot on the body, but shes getting there.
I like the old diesel sound. The heavy knock that makes a diesel a diesel. Now, question for you.. You say tuning makes the "new sound". Does that mean it can be adjusted back to the "old sound"? What about other diesels.....? I really do not like the new stuff. I work on tractor trailers and even a lot of them are sounding wimpy.

They can be adjusted to sound like "old" diesel engines, and I think Bully Dog, or someone like them, makes programming for just such a thing. I have seen several Duramax engines where the pilot injection was deleted and they rattle like an old 1693 Cat.
