WTF is with prices on diesel trucks?

Every now and then I like to peruse Craigslist, Autotrader and other sites to check out diesel trucks, and I always have to wonder what some people are thinking.

A few examples:
1997 F250
1990 Dodge - Are you kidding?

Both of those are at the same dealer, who apparently thinks they are made of gold.

Also saw this one:
97 Dodge Ram SLT 4x4 2500 Cummins 5.9L Rebuilt Trans – Only 63k miles

yeah right.

I looked.

If someone wants to pay for it because it is exactly what they wanted... I suppose there's no big deal of paying for just what you want. Most of the cars are very clean looking. I'd shop there but I'd talk him down. It's just common courtesy to do so. If he IS asking too much then he will learn.

It took a year to find my dually. It was exactly what I wanted but the used dealer was asking 2,000 more then it really should have cost. I decided it was worth it to me. I drove 4 hours away and bought it without haggling.

I agree his prices are very high. Both of those trucks are pretty rare. The Ford looks to be in awesome condition, short bed extended cabs are hard to find. That truck didn't even have a hitch on it. But they are trucks not low mileage muscle cars. I think he may be sitting on them for a while.

I just picked up a 4WD 2006 F-350 Crew/Long Bed 6.0L Powerstroke for $13,500 w/ 113k on it. Why you someone pay another $1500 more for a 9 year older truck. Granted, the 6.0L gets a bad rap, but, from what I understand, with the proper maintenance, the newer ones ('05-'07) are a good engine.

Agreed, sounds like you got a good deal, 113k is just broken in.

Short bed extended cab '94-97's are hard to find?

I've seen 2 or 3 of them just in my town, fairly recently.

7.3's and early 5.9's are commanding a high price. I never see one with less 100,000 on them. I must admit I like the look of that dodge but the stacks would have to go.
I could never pay those prices but I did see a 97 PSD with 200,000 on it go for 8500 it's all about finding the right buyer.
As the EPA chokes us out these older trucks are going to get more valuable.

I took a drive around town yesterday after work and looked at the car lots...... There were only 3 used 3/4 ton trucks in the whole town. i live in an 80k population town so there are LOTS of car dealers.
There was no used diesels at the Dodge dealer, One at the Ford dealer, and two at the Chevy dealer.
This may be the reason why used trucks are bringing soooo much money.

hell, if i was after one and still in the north country, i'd be calling about that ford and trying to get him to cut some $$$ on that price. i'd love to add that to my yard here... it'd fit great.

Well, if you go to his website it says $15,900 FIRM on the Ford. Same thing for the Dodge. He wouldn't budge on that price because he knows he'll get some sucker to pay that much.

It would be interesting to see how willing he is to budge on that price 3 or 4 months from now if it's still sitting on his lot. You also have to wonder who will lend the buyer that kind of money on a 12 year old truck.

Well I dealt with someone exactly like this a few years ago. Went to look at a '98 Ram, quad cab, 12V cummins, 5 speed. Supposedly it's kinda rare, but this truck was clapped out. Rip in the driver's seat, really bad rust on driver's door, dings and dents all over, whole front end needed redone (tie rods, ball joints, track bar).

Guy told me he wouldn't take a dollar under $12,000 for it. I said "See ya."

And this was after I saw the truck on Autotrader.com for almost 6 months. It was on there at least another 4 before it finally disappeared. I don't know if he ever actually sold it or just sent it to auction.
