300 c.i. and 5 spd. into a '68 F250 4x4

Okay, after 25+ years with a 410 in my '68 F250 4x4, I am ready to down-size to a 300 c.i. Six ... HOWEVER, I want to upgrade to a 5 spd. overdrive trans. for better fuel economy. The rear diff. is 4.10 and I still run the original 8 x 19.5 tires/wheels it came with when new.

My 410 (with NP435 4 spd.) was completely rebuilt last year and has less than 1000 miles on it, but I really don't require that kind of power any more and just want to get from Point "A" to Point "B" these days. I may wish to pull a very small travel trailer from time to time.

I was told by a friend who does all kinds of engine swaps for folks in Reno that I can install a late-model 300 c.i. Six with a 5 spd. tranny (out of a UPS delivery truck) right into my chassis.

Have any of you done such a swap (without a big hassle). I am retired and on a small budget so I need to take the easiest path to completion.

Thank You in advance for your help, Howard

Howard, Everything should work, the biggest concern will be mating the tranny to the transfer case, and I can't help with that.

The engine should fit the current perches, gas pedal to carb will be different. Some wiring changes will need to be made.

Get the concerned issues resolved and go for it. PLAN Plan plan.

Obviously if you have the divorced transfer case that will make things a lot easier as well. Are you looking to sell that 410?

Yes, I will just have to re-fabricate the T-case driveline to fit the Trans extension. A Custom Driveline shop is just 3 miles from me.

I still have all of the Six Cylinder parts (+ engine) that I removed back in the early 80's when I transplanted the 410. I kinda figured the day might come when I would want that old 300 back in there.
I'll probably go with a UPS engine/5 spd. trans. and keep my old 300 for another project.

Not certain if my Son will want the 410 for one of his projects, but it MAY
go up for sale.
