My Truck Hiccuped Yesterday

I was driving down Whittier Blvd. on the way to my sisters house when it lost pedal response and started laying down a smoke cloud. It cleared up in a few seconds and was fine the rest of the day. Might be sticking turbo vanes...definitely air related.

Going down to OC Diesel Shop this morning to see Bud. Hopefully he can take care of me before Thursday, cause that's when I need to leave for Boise.

Wow Steve that sucks, the odd thing is you lost pedal responce. Smoke is understandable but a lost pedal then came back? Did it feel like it was accelerating or stuck idling? Smoking....

I want to go down to his shop to see if he has any trucks torn apart. If you need a ride back or something let me know. I wouldn't mind taking the drive down there. Well as long as I'm not busy but it's been slow recently.

Well, the EGR valve failed the function test. Bud pulled it out to change it, and both it and the intake are wet - the cooler failed. I guess that explains why the sodium was up so much in my last Blackstone oil analysis.

He's changing the oil cooler also.....that's probably what caused it in the first place.

Thanks for the offer for a ride Bob, but I'm gonna hang out here during the operation.

Bud probably won't remember me, but tell him I said hello.

Are you taking any pictures of the operation?

Yep - there's one up in the air right now.

All I have is my phone....I'll snap a couple, but no guarantees as to the quality.

I'll give him your best, Russ

Hold the cam very steady so the pix can come out the best. Phone camaras are sometimes a little crappy. Yes take pix please so we can see all the connectors that go on the engine and where it seperates from the cab. If you can, please, thank you.

The cab isn't coming up.....the heads are staying put. It's not necessary to lift the cab to replace the coolers.

Sorry to hear that, Steve. So tell us about it. You should still be under warranty so I assume you are not replacing with OEM?

Correct. I'm having him put the more robust one in there, the one with the 6 tubes instead of the radiator-looking stock one. I believe it's from Neal technologies. I didn't want to fool with the dealer on this not only because of the time constraints, but because I don't want to put the stock cooler back in it and I have full faith in Bud's work.....the dealer is an unknown quantity.

Wow Steve you certainly did not wait on the repairs needed on your truck. At this rate it looks like your truck may be making the trip as well.

You are in luck that it happened here at home. Better stop in Vegas and pull some handles with that luck.

With all the miles I've put on in the last two months I'd have to agree.

It's been going out for a while - my sodium on the last Blackstone analysis was 22, as opposed to my normal average of 4.

That's the oil that was in the truck on our trip to Pennsylvania which I changed when we got back.
