'93 7.3 IDI has noisy serpentine belt
#17
Hey guys, I realize this is an old post but I need some advice on my 1993 7.3 (non turbo). My belt only squeals when i'm at higher rpm and my fan is on...doesn't squeal on startup, doesn't squeal during high rpm (without fan) at all....but as soon as fan kicks on and my engine is over 1600 rpm I have the awful loud squeal going on. Can you help me with diagnosing the problem? Much appreciated!

Thanks lonewolf! Dumb question - how do I tell if the tensioner is bad? Do I put my torque wrench on it and see how much it takes to move it? I only ask because I installed the belt and I had to pull on the tensioner to get the belt on (obviously)... I appreciate your advice

look for play in the bearings and the bushing where it Pivots... and yeah you use a wrench to hold it back while replacing belts.
also look at the Idler pulley below the tensioner.
look at how the belt is Tracking over the tensioner too... IF it's a good belt you might use some belt dressing.
there are several different tensioners that were used on the 93 and also several different sized belts

well, that looks like a 3G alternator to me.... there are range marks on the Tensioner so that you can tell if it is in the correct position or not.
I always have problems getting the right belt for mt 93 F250 with AP any time I go to the parts houses... well I did remove the dual Alternators and just run a single now but I either get the part number off my belt or I take the old one in and match it up.
this is handy https://www.gatestechzone.com/en/pro...-failure-signs it's just general information but it applies
and just to give you some idea of the BS some go thru over the tensioners and belts .... https://www.thedieselstop.com/thread...sembly.155553/
and for an example the marks on this one would be basically centered in that window with the correct belt.. there are like I said several different types of tensioners and range markings are different on them all.

If you need a tensioner, I've gotten to where I only buy Dayco tensioners, they're available locally at a car quest (bought out by advanced Auto parts) and they're the only tensioner from the auto zoo places that are worth a damn anymore. Especially on Cummins, those things love to squeak and alot of times it's the tensioner itself not the belt.....
A new Dayco takes twice the force to compress as the competition imo.
They definitely gave you the wrong belt, try the correct one first. As lonewolf said that's a 3g alternator
