ball joints etc replacement question

ok... when ever i go over a speed bump or sometimes any small bump i can feel in my steering wheel like something is loose and hanging on by what seemes a string. i dont know how to explain it but i can hear it rattling around... my truck has over 200 thousand miles now and i think this would be the ball joints... sorry for the terribl explanation but i really dont know how to explain it.. ya'll think its the ball joints??? if so how much would it cost to do it myself? the garage gave me an estimate of 750 dollars..of which i dont have (im a college student) lol... any help would be greatly appreciated

put a 2 ton floor jack under one of the front A- frames. Jack that tire up 2 inches off the ground. Done use the truck frame, use the A- frame, under the shock. Now grab the tire and shake it in and out to see if the tie rods sockets are loose. Next, get a 2 x 4 about 3 feet long and stick one edge under the tire and pry it up and down. Have a buddy look at the lower ball joint to see what it is doing. Should not have any clunk or play. Its not real hard to do ball joints, but you need a variety of tools. And a few hours of time.
