Dan, have you done any of my before mentioned mods to your 68? What kind of gas mpg are you getting? Any other tips or thoughts I might like to know? Thanks

Yep, you got a deal on that truck!! Not rusted out and not beat up. The driveline is worth that much, everything else is a bonus. It will make a great project.

You haven't read the following....

I knew the info up front, but memories can fade, so I looked in the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog...just to be sure, before typing that info.

Text, Section 70: Transmission Applicaton Charts, Pages 15 & 17.

Page 15: 1984/85 6.9L & 7.5L = Trans ID numbers: E4TR-7003-MA & E4T3-7003-TA, UA, VA = Warner T19.

There's a whole bunch more T19/460's listed on Page 17.

Do ya happen to have a microfiche reader? If so, I have lots of extra Ford microfiche parts catalog slides that cover 1980 and later trucks.

I'll pass them along, gratis. I'll even pay for the stamps.

Or...you can waltz on down to your local dealer and ask to see the above parts catalog refs.

Kinda apples and oranges. My '68 is a 2wd with the original 360, converted to electronic ignition and sporting an Edelbrock Performer intake and carb. As I've said, it has the T-19 and has a Gear Vendors O/D as well...and still gets a best of maybe 12 MPG. I'm going to be doing an engine swap this winter so I haven't really focused on improving it any.

Your truck, being 4X4 with a 460 is a fairly different critter, though the gas mileage might be close to mine...

However, the T-19 swap would still be an improvemnt in driveability.

Yeah the T-19 is sounding pretty good. Im gonna start with brakes and i was hoping steering but idk if thats possible, but tranny is up there on my list. Seems like it would be pretty pricy though. Any idea what kind of man hours / cost a tranny swap like that would take? Its something i'm not familiar with and the local shop prices here scare me almost as much as doing a tranny swap on my own do! For something like that though, im sure you'd want a professional to do it.

It's not a bad project to tackle on your own. It may seem a bit intimidating if you've never replaced a tranny before, but it's not really all that bad. We can talk you through it, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to get someone to help you that's familiar with the process. It's a pretty easy tranny to repace, but it is a heavy sucker and there are a few tricks that make the process go easier.

While we are on the topic of trannys for my truck , if i were to do this swap could i swap in an automatic tranny? Is that a realistic option? I guess im asking a question you cant answer, how about -- are there many compatible automatic transmissions for my truck? And roughly how difficult is the conversion from 4 speed to auto anyways?

p.s. Thanks again so much for all this info! You guys are pro. My truck would be a beater without all the help, but no. Its a classic

Actually, swapping in an automatic is pretty easy...as long as you have the right one for the application. Best bet would be a C6 for a 351M/400/460 (same bolt pattern) that's set up for 4X4 which means it needs to have the correct tailshaft and housing to bolt up to a transfer case, as automatics are virtually always married to the T-case rather than divorced like yours is (or should be...looks like it from the pic anyway.) And then of course you need the proper adapter to bolt a T-case to it, as well as a T-case that's set up to bolt to the tranny rather than separate. It's fairly easy, but probably not cheap unless you find everything you need from another (newer) truck.

It's generally considered to be easier to swap to an automatic than it is to swap an automatic to a manual.

Something to consider anyway...

or this?

The first one won't work, it would be for a 351W which has a different bolt pattern than the 351M.

The second one sounds like a smokin' deal...you get a parts truck for 1200 bucks with a freshly rebuilt engine, then sell the engine to get your money back and you wind up with a parts truck for free! It might even have the power steering and power brakes parts you need, might even have a disc brake front axle which could be swapped into yours complete (provided the gear ratio is the same as yours...if not, then swap in the rear axle as well!)

I'd be shooting him an email ASAP...!

All 1976 and later 4WD's have front disc brakes, but...the second truck is an F150.

F150's have 5 lug wheels, F250's have 8. The F150's disc brakes and related parts are not the same as an F250, neither is the rear axle.

Rebuilt engine? What does that mean? When I see that, I just smile, because when some ppl refer to their engine as being re-built, it may only consist of a valve job.

Ask to see receipts for the rebuilt engine....and the rebuilt C6 transmission.

If the seller has no receipts, how do you know what was actually done? You don't.

When buying something from a private seller, do not forget that these ppl can LIE as much...or WORSE than used car dealers and lawyers.

Good catch on the F150 vs. F250, I was too much of a hurry to get out the door this morning and missed that. F150 parts are still good trading stock though. However, the ad does say "professionally rebuilt 400M V8 still in packaging" which would give me a slight bit of confidence that it may actually be as claimed and not a home-done "Krylon Rebuild".

Half the fun is in modifying it to be what you want. Has it sort of grabbed you and made you feel proud to own it yet? If so, then I'd for sure keep it and make it your own.

Yeah i kind of have. With winter hitting here already its hard to find the same motivation to work hard on it, but i still do love the truck and i still see its potential. So i hate to say it, cuz this post is two pages long now lol but i need clarification i guess on where to go from here. Im just a little confused by all the info thrown at me. I understand what to do about the tranny, i need either a t-19 or a c-6 depending on if i wanna switch to auto or not. But im still honestly quite confused on how to go about making it power steering power brakes. I dont know what parts i need exactly or if its possible? or where to even start? i apologize again, i feel like a huge pain. but once again, any help or info is greatly appreciated.
