Breaking Teeth

So next week the truck is going to the mechanic to look at the flywheel and starter because for about a month or so I have had a grinding sound come up. So I might be looking at a new starter (Best case) or a new flywheel (worst case) and after poking around the web looking at flywheel I came up with a question. Would getting a lighter flywheel help anything (mileage, Wheel HP, etc)? If so steel or aluminum is there a durability issue with either one? And for the hell of it what am I looking cost of parts wise on a OEM starter or flywheel?

I'm seriously hoping it is the starter I'm iffy on whether or not I can pay for just the labor to replace the flywheel.
