Fuel filter & air filter replacement

Manual says fuel filter is FG 986B, Ford parts says it is FG 1036 (he says the FG 986B hasn't been used since early 2000). When I am under truck it looks like the FG 986B (one line in, one line out versus a 3 line setup on the FG 1036). Filter is right up against fuel tank with blue clip one side.

1. Anybody able to confirm which fuel filter is correct and 2. is it critical to use Motorcraft fuel and air filters or is STP or FRAM sufficient?

Thanks.

I wouldn't use any filter other than Motocraft. Fram is garbage. I see FG1036 as the correct filter for 2007-08.

What year is yours?

Mine is a 2007 4x4. I had a chance to squeeze under the truck since I posted and was able to get a flashlight in far enough to see 3 lines on the filter - so it looks like the FG1036 is correct after all. The other posts (mainly from F150's) regarding FRAM and other filters weren't positive so it looks like a little online shopping will be in order for both the fuel and air filters since my local dealer wants almost $60 for both. Thanks.

Try Rockauto.com. Very good prices on Motorcraft.

They look like the best so far - ~$37-38 with shipping for both filters. Do you know a part number for the fuel line disconnect tool or is a 5/16" tool pretty general at a local auto parts? Do you know if Rockauto.com would carry the disconnect tool? Thanks for the help with this.

That I could not tell you. Others might know. I had my companies mechanic change the fuel filter.
