Yes. Those would all be 28oz imbalance parts.

The 6 bolts that are referred to earlier, in previous posts, are the bellhousing to block, not the flywheel, just to be clear. Both the 28 and 50 oz flywheels/flexplates have the same bolt parrern, so they physically interchange (even though they shouldn't, imo, and would help with eliminating a lot of confusion if they didn't), but not dynamically.

Sorry yes it is the bellhousing 6 bolt also. I guess I'm on my way again.

So now what I'm using on my 1980 block is my 1980 timing chain cover with the cast water pump and 1972 Comet flywheel. I'm using my 28oz. skinny harmonic balancer from the 289 with the 3 bolt pulley. The top pulley will be the 289 one also with a little shimming to line up belt since my 302 pump sticks out farther than the 289 set up. Hopefully all goes well.

Thanks for the help. We'll keep you informed.....and maybe a pic!

Or, just get a waterpump for a 66-69 289/302, and you won't have to mess with shimming pulleys. Brackets and pullies will line up as they should, and it will work on your 302 timing cover.

Does the 66/69 waterpump have the sheetmetal back? Cause the 1980 does and the 289 style doesn't. Seep hole in bottom of 302 timing chain cover for whatever that may seep out between sheetmetal backing plate on 302 pump and not in 289 cover. The 289 cover is fully enclosed since the back is open on the 289 waterpump and would leak otherwise.

Yes. The late 289 style water pump is built like the later, 302 style, like your '80 pump, but the shape and length is different. But the bolt pattern is the same, and will fit on your later cover. Ford changed the water pumps, brackets, pullies, etc., on the small blocks to the "newer" style in 1970, but left the timing covers the same.

BTW, that "soft plug" you mentioned on your early cover, that's where the oil filler spout used to be, before they had a hole in the valve cover for it, pre '64.

My 66 --289, 6 bolt ,c/4 from a 66 galaxy came with a cast iron pump with the sheetmetal cover on the back. I bought the car new . I later a few years ago put that engine in my 64 falcon that came with the 260 five bolt block. I used the aluminium 64 pump and it's matching timing chain cover . All of the pullys brackets ect. worked. If those parts were not supposed to go together I wish somebody had told me 15 years ago so I would not have driven it so many years.

It's alive

Thanks again guys for all the help and confusion.....some supplied by me!

Since it was so cold like most winters I decided to not start my new motor till it got warmer......I finally started it this past weekend. I haven't drove it yet but it purrs like a cat! So in a day or 2 I'll see if it runs as good as it sounds. Maybe Wednesday I'll go for a 50 miler shake down.

Wish me luck...........Michigan Rick
