Question Biodiesel & the 6.0

Here is the story, Got crashed (hit in the a$$) on the freeway last sunday night, body shop guys are thinking that the insurance company of the guy that hit me is going to total my truck. So I have been searching around the net for 05 to 07, 6 liters. There are quite a few out there but the question I have for you 6.0 guru's is how much bio-d can a 6.0 handel?
Yes I am one of them nuts that brews his own fuel from vegi oil and been running 100% with no issues at all in my 7.3 for the past four summers.
I don't do it in the winter because I jelled it up the first two winters trying to run to high of a blend of bio.
So in the summer months IE: May to Early Oct can I run 100% bio in a 6.0 without making myself a giant problem?

I'm not sure about 100%, but I know mine loves B20 and it's GREAT for injector lubrication. Ford is of the opinion that biodiesel gunks up the spool valves in the injectors but I fail to see how it's possible since the spool valve is an oil thing not a fuel thing. Check down in the alternative fuels forum if you haven't already. I'm sure someone there can tell you. FWIW--I'd go with the 07 if $$$ isn't that much of an issue. Virtually all the little motor quirks were worked out by then.

I've been burning bio for almost 2 years. I run b100 april thru sept. I then burn b50-b80 during the winter months. And when I go to the mountains I run dino diesel. The truck runs good on b100. It does get around 1 mpg less and has a little less hp. But these motors are so powerful that the power loss is not an issue. The motor runs so much quieter and smoother. Just keep a keen eye on those fuel filters. The 6.0 does not like to have low fuel pressure. Other than a few emergency fuel filter changes I have had no problems. I keep a spare set of filters and tools in the truck. The most important thing is the quality of your biodiesel.

B5 in the winter and B20 in the summer for me. No issues to date. Carry spares and tools like tazo said.

Bio Cost?

How much does the new biodiesel cost?
I haven't seen any around here, Seacoast NH, yet.
Is there any mileage improvements?

I brew my own, and have seen the same results as most everyone who runs it at 100% 1-2 mpg loss on my stroke. Don't see any loss on the IDI in the motorhome it's always 10-11 mpg no matter what i do.....

I honestly thing that if "you" were to get a custom tune(doesn't even really have to up hp/tq if you don't want it to), that might help in the mpg department as there is an energy difference between the two fuels and a different fueling strategy might help with that. This is just me speculating, but I truly think that it's more of a fueling table thing then anything else.

I don't have anything to support this, this is just me speculating here, but I think it would be worth looking into.

Mileage is less as stated above. Check here for where to buy it http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodi...lfuelingsites/.

Well I'm just curious. I'd like to try the bio fuel. I'm not "Green" but I'm all for bio fuel especially since us diesel guys have been seeing the future since we got our trucks.

I'm happy with my mileage as it is. I do on average 20/22, but when the temp drops a bit and the air dries out I'll be getting a cool 22/24 for a couple months before it gets down below 40.
Fuel prices are nothing compared to this time last year either. $2.55/gal, pshhh I'm fine with that, there's no reason why we can't be down around a buck but that won't happen.
Just curious that's all, I'd like to show the whiny hippies a thing or two with a tank of bio diesel.

Oh, I failed to mention that it is the same cost as dino at the only retailer around here.$2.73/gal yesterday when I filled up.

I have an 03 with just shy of 150k. I have run on 5-20 % bio as much as I can. I have a Diablo Sport tuner and get 1-2 mpg better running bio than regular fuel. Bio diesel tends to clean anything in your fuel system out and it is this crap that plugs the filters, not the fuel itself. I agree that it makes the 6.0 quieter at idle than regular diesel as well.

So did you do anything prior to running the bio? At 5-20% do you have to do any conversion on the fuel system or motor?

It would depend on what type of bio your running. If your running pure veggie oil I think that you have to have a conversion. For 5-20% you shouldn't have to worry about a conversion. Even Ford will still warranty the truck if 5% is used(although the ASTM standards have approved of B20 as a true fuel comparable to D2).
