Can bad EGR valve allow coolant into engine oil?

I need some help. Both my service manager and his tech are telling me the old style EGR valve (one with hose connected to coolant resovoir) could not possible allow coolant to get back into engine oil. Is this a correct statement or not? I have a small amount getting into the engine and they pressure tested the EGR coolers and said they were good. I'm thinking if that line is headed to the EGR valve then it is possible to get some coolant into the engine but am not sure. Any thoughts?

Here is my thoughts. Although it might somehow be freakishly possible for the old style EGR valve to get coolant into the oil, it is highly unlikely. Sounds like you might have a front cover cavitated. Are you sure it is coolant and not fuel?

Yes i'm very sure. I did a oil analysis and i'm high in Potassium plus the coolant degas bottle has dropped 1.5 inches of coolant. Not sure how it made it in but it's definitly got in the oil somehow. Any ideas?

Front cover cavitation and EGR coolers are the biggest issues that cause this on these trucks. Not likely an EGR cooler as it will usually burn up in the combustion chamber. Once an EGR cooler has failed enough to fill a cylinder and hydrolock, then yes it will get plenty of coolant in the oil. There could also be a problem with the engine block, or a head/head gasket problem.

I really haven't noticed anyone having head gasket problems. Sawtooth indicated that it has been pressure tested and no leaks were evident.

had the same thing happen to my 06 250. at first they thought that i had messed up a head gasket but then they realized that some how the egr cooler was leaking coolant into the block. not sure how it happened but it did. according to the dealership where i got it fixed it is a very rare problem but that is BS. in my company we own 15 F250/350s and 10 of them have had that problem.

best bet to keep it from doin this again is to got to your local off road shop and do an EGR delete. they are anywhere from 500 to 2000 depending on how they do the delete. got mine for about 1000 dollars and havent had a problem since then. and once i got it done it gave me better throttle response and i gained a couple MPG

Thanks riddick2007,

so i guess this blocks the EGR and removes the egr coolers correct? Who does this type work?

Sawtooth since you are running the Spartan tuner you could have them send you some tunes with the EGR turned off and run the block off plates from Cobb's Diesel CobbsDieselPerformance.com :: 866-380-3076 :: CDP 6.4L EGR Block-Off Plates. I run the SCT Livewire with custom tunes from RCD and the tunes have the EGR turned off plus you can select that function in the Livewire setup. If you installed the plates and one of the coolers was leaking there is no way it could get in to the engine and if your UOA came back good after the plates were installed you would know it was a EGR cooler leak.

yeah this may be something i'll try later this year. I've been trying to see if i'm still leaking coolant but so far it hasn't moved any. Now i'm wondering if the system is only leaking when i tow heavy. I've not towed any amount of weight in several weeks and the coolant level hasn't moved. Next month i'll send out a new oil sample so guess i'll know more then. Thanks for the help.

keep us posted. It maybe the towing issue puts more stress on the system and then it shows up. Would be interesting to see the current oil sample without the towing and coolant loss issue.

It'll be a good test as i'm hauling a truck full of stuff to Nebraska and back but it will be a light load for 3/4 ton work. Anyway we'll see how things turn out. Going to do a little bird and deer hunting while i'm out there. Be interesting on fuel mileage as well cause its mostly flat ground at 75mph. My fuel mileage has been going up so kinda anxious to see how she'll do on that trip.
