Found a truck. Would you say this is a fair price?

So I've been bugging you guys here and there about what you would pay for trucks. Anyway, I found one that is the color I like and has pretty much all the options I like. (2008 F-250 CC Short Bed 4x4, Lariat, CD Changer, diesel, sunroof, 20 inch wheels, cd changer and probably a few other minor things.) It has about 36,500 miles on it. The place is asking $35,995 and the guy said he would go no lower then $35k because that is what they are getting at the auctions out there.

Now as I understand it, seeing as this is the first super duty or diesel that I have ever owned, 36k miles is nothing for these types of trucks.

My issue is, $35,995 was the asking price when they got it, it has been on their lot for 5 months now. However, when they got it it had 34,000 miles on it, so it still had warranty. I guess the salesman/manager/whatever his title is has been driving it though, so now it has over 36k miles on it. Would you all agree with me that it would be worth a little less now since the 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty is up?

I figured I would fly down and take a look at it (which is no problem since I work for an airline) and maybe make the guy an offer. I figured maybe if I show up in person he might be willing to talk, but he claims that he won't go under $35k.

Now on the other hand, the dealer up here offered a new 2009 for $44.6k with pretty much the same options. Would you guys buy the new one or stick to the 2008 for $35k? I mean, I'm just thinking that even $44.6k is starting to get up there for a truck.

What would you all think is a fair price to pay for this vehicle?

Any input is GREATLY appreciated.

Here is a link to it... (Keep in mind, their page says 34k miles but it has over 36k now, so no more warranty)

I think you have a very valid argument, once they go out of the 36/36 they are not worth as much. The next big milestone of course will be the 5/100K on the drivetrain. Remember right now, at least where I am, '09's have around $5K in rebates and can be had for near invoice before those rebates.

Carfax says that truck has been offered for sale since 3/2/09 FWIW, here is the window sticker on it:

http://services.forddirect.fordvehic...SW21R38EB71534

I feel the price is a bit high but I have always had a hard time trying to figure out what Lariats are worth.

Forgot the in service date on the warranty was in 8/07 so it is also down to only 3 years on the powertrain.

".......the guy said he would go no lower then $35k because that is what they are getting at the auctions out there."

Any way to verify this? Sounds like bull to me, but I have heard that SUV's and big PU's were at a premium lately......fear of higher EPA MPG requirements.....(The sky is falling, the sky .......)

lol I don't know how to verify it but I kind of got that feeling also. He also says that he put a new set of tires on it which cost $1600 also. Personally, I don't know what kind of tires he's using but they must be some super set of tires because at that price each tire is more then my slicks cost which I have a hard time believing...

what do you all use for finding these things? I've looked on e-bay and autotrader, but everything seems to be around $35 - $40k and if its less its got a LOT of miles on it. Is there a better service to use to locate vehicles? Again, going pretty much anywhere in the country is not a problem. (I've had no luck with craigslist either)

Last time I talked on the phone the guy said $33 or $34k isn't going to happen so don't waste my time going down there. Do you think he'd change his mind on that if I showed up w/ cash?

I guess let me ask this, if you were in the market to buy a truck like this, would you buy this one and for how much?

The price is more than i would be willing to pay for it, especially since no warranty left.

I drove this one, http://austin.craigslist.org/ctd/1369342394.html
didn't like the 4x4 myself.. (just now over 36000 miles)

don't know the miles on this one, http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ctd/1370749075.html
but once you're over 36k they are all about the same.

I bought an 08 F350, dually, CC, lariat, 4x2, with 45000miles, for 33k.

The important question is what would you pay for the truck? Do you like the color and is it in premium condition? The fact that the overall warranty expired would not bother me. You still have the 5 year/100K mile drive train warranty, which is what matters with a diesel engine. The price is fine IF you love the truck. If there is anything that you do not like about the truck, then keep looking.

I would do what you think is best, but I like new when you are not talking that much difference in price. You will know how that truck has been treated, serviced and every little thing that has been done to it. I had a dealer offer to sell me a lariat that listed for $52,640 for $40,000. It was a real nice truck with leather and all, but it had the 60/40 seat and I wanted the buckets and cloth(I generally keep a truck too long for leather to last, I love the leather, but it is not right for me). They then offered me a XLT list $48,960 for $37,000. I ended up buying at a different dealer a XLT list $50,975 for $40,000. The 1st dealer offered better deals by just a little, but I got as close to the exact truck I wanted without having to order one and wait. Another good thing about new is you can usually get a better interest rate. I got 5.5% at my bank. Having your own financing lined up allows you to negoiate price not payments. Good luck and I hope this helps some by showing you how they were dealing in late June and early July in the D/FW area.

One thing I forgot to add to my earlier post is if you own a certain year or newer Ford, they will give you an additional $1,000 off for a Ford loyalty discount. I didn't qualify for that, but maybe you do. If so, that would get it real close to the price of the used one without all the issues of an '08, plus you would have a full warranty.

Ya know that's kind of funny! IF they were getting $35K at the auctions , my friend he would have had it there in a heartbeat!! $35k in his hand is better than holding on to it and let someone maybe buy it for the same price? It costs him to keep it on the lot!!
