Want to swap 3.89 rear for 3.50

John, I am learning and unsure do I need a 3.50 or is ford 9 inch the 3.54? I also went with the 255/70/15 tires and changed my tire height from 26.5 to 29 inches. I now need the 18T speedo gear. The big tires also seems to make the 223 breathe a sigh of relief. What tips can you guys give me for the pumpkin swap when I find the other gear set? Adjustments? Things to look for/avoid? Also what are the vehicles I need to search for in the junk yard? Unlike a post a few days ago, most of us are very thankful for all the wisdom.
Thanks a million.

Jay, Bill da dummy can better define the 9", but it is a popular type of rear gear offered in many different ratios. The actual ratio maybe 3.54 and referred to as 3.50. Take a look at this page. http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm
All the NASCAR racing divisions use a highly modified version of the Ford 9" in all race cars and trucks. The 9" became popular because of the fast swaps that can be made. One can do a complete gear ratio swap in an hour.
When you changed your tire height 2 1/2" you lowered your ratio. The ratio basically is how many revolutions the driveshaft makes to turn the tire one complete rotation. The larger tire's start to stop rotation mark will be further apart.
Hope I haven't fuzed you more.

12 = Ford 9 inch rear axle / 3.89-1 / non Limited Slip
The 3.50-1 axle ratio was first offered in 1965, the ring & pinion is the same thru 1986. Ford Confusion: Ford sometimes refered to the 3.50 as a 3.54.
3.50-1: 1965/83 F100 // 1975/86 F150 // 1969/86 E100/150 // 1966/86 Bronco // 1965/74 Galaxie/LTD // 1975/78 LTD and many other passenger cars thru 1979.
CAVEAT EMPTOR: Make sure you verify before buying a used rear end or 3rd member that's it IS a 9 inch.
The Ford EIGHT inch rear end was used in myriad 1962/80 passenger cars (except LTD/Galaxies/Lincoln's/full sized Merc's). It looks exactly the same as a 9 inch.
1970/72 F100's were available with an optional H/D 9 inch...BUT...while classified as a 9 inch, the ring gear is 9 3/8" in diameter.
Most of the internal parts are not the same!
This same rear end was also available in certain: 1966/72 Galaxie/LTD/Mercury/Thunderbird. ALL 1966/72 Lincoln's & Lincoln Continental Mark III's and Mark IV's.
btw: I cannot give you the Warranty Plate AXLE codes for a 3.50-1 ratio, you wanna know why?
Because...Ford changed the 3.50-1 AXLE code several times and passenger cars use a different AXLE code than trucks do, and there are several different codes as well.

Yes the axle shafts must be removed to pull the third member (pumpkin) out. Most of the trucks in salvage yards (especially 4X2's) in my neck of the woods have 3.25 ratios. It seems like any time I find a 4X4 or something that may have had a lower gear (numerically higher) the axle is already gone. Never much thought about the drain plug issue.
