56 ford with 302

gave up on trying to rebuild 272 y block, now change to 302 I think it is a 1984 mustang motor. I bought a cross member from mid fifty with motor mounts. I want to try to use my stock 3 on the tree and was hoping that someone would know if there is a transmission that will mount to the 302 and still work. also what transmission cross member would i need to use any help thanks

Well, I need to ask if you are looking for a manual transmission or an automatic.

A C4 would be a nice transmission to put on the back of the 302 and you can convert your stock "three-on-the-tree" shift to work with the automatic VERY easily. I'm sure there are lots of 3 speed manuals that you could adapt - they just need side shifters. In that case you might need to adjust or make new shift connecting rods.

The cross member, of course is going to depend on the transmission you choose and the depth it has when mounted at the proper angle. For example, the bigger C6 needs a transmission mount that is about 5 inches deeper than a C4 because of it's girth and length. Transmission cross members are available at most of the parts places, or if you have a good welding shop close by you can always have one made and bolted in.

Here is a picture of mine in the 51 with a C6. I use my stock steering column withthe C6 - it's VERY tight, but it works just fine. Here also is a link about that conversion we had a few months ago.

If you are wanting to keep the 3 speed manual on the tree and you still have the original transmission, why not just keep it? There are adapters available to mate it to a 302 and this would save you a lot of fabrication. Your existing trans. crossmember and mount, shift linkage, and driveshaft will all fit without changes. Check with Transdapt for the adapter. They may be a little pricey, but so is rigging a different transmission in place.

when i bought my 56 it had a 351w with the 3 on the tree in it with no adapter. i'm guessing it was the original trans. had home made mounts for engine and trans.

302 with 3 speed

I have a 302 motor in my 56 ford f100. It has a 3 speed on the tree transmission in it. I think the 3 speed came out of a 65 or so ford car. My 302 came out of a 1985 ford mustang GT H.O. I have a 4 barrel carb and duel exhaust. The motor mounts for the motor are out of a 1971 mustang. I hope this helps you out.
