Outside mirror question for you stock 56 guys?

I just purchased this mirror off of the famous auction site. It is listed as a part number B6TZ-17696-A.

A few years back I also bid on, but lost an auction for this mirror. ( which I think "Abe" from this forum ended up getting.) Its part number was B6C-18402-A.

My question is this? Are they both correct mirrors for a 56 F100? Or maybe one is an replacement part number? If anyone can shed any light on this i would appreciate it.

This one came off my 53 f100. Besides the mirror portion being different it looks to be much shorter then yours. I can't offer any more information or evan a part number for that matter, but it is for sale, it any body is interested.

I think NumberDummy can probably answer this question best, but looking at my parts manual, the B6C-18402-A does show as the correct rear view mirror for a 56 truck. But, as an accessory.

Looking at the picture of the B6TZ-17696-A, it looks to me like there are two mounting brackets but only one mirror? Maybe this part number was for a kit of two? Right/Left? The base number 17696 is listed as a mirror base number, but that is all I see.

Find Bill, I am sure he can answer this.

As far as I know and believe your mirror is correct for '53-'56. You got 2 brackets and arms but only one mirror. The other one you show I think I did bid on it but it got too salty for my wallet. Since I couldn't afford it I put that picture in my gallery so at least I can look at it. Also, so guys can see what a stock mirror looks like. I do not know why there are 2 different parts numbers, perhaps different years.

Part of the arm is stainless and will shine up real nice with steel wool. The big nut is also stainless and will shine.

Abe, I always assumed since you had that photo and that style mirror on your truck that you were the successful bidder. I tend to believe what V8muscle said may be true, that these maybe were a 2 piece kit, and one mirror head is gone. I should receive Monday or Tuesday. Maybe the box will reveal more than is shown in the picture. Will ppost more info when I receive them. Don

Here is a picture of what was received. Very nice NOS condition, some minor scratches and paint imperfections, but no corrosion or rust. The box seems to indicate only one mirror for that number, but I also received an additional door bracket / lower arm assembly as well. Probably leftover pieces from another mirror assembly? When slipped together the shortest the arm will be is 18". How does this compare to the mirrors that some of you may have? If I can locate another mirror head and upper arm, I will have another complete mirror. Part of the fun. Guys, thanks for your input on this.

53 F100,

I measured my mirror arms today. I measured the old ones that were on the truck when I bought it from my grandfather. He bought it new. I measured the black sleeve that the stainless piece fits into. The old ones were:drivers side: 101/4"; passenger side: 11". The passenger side arm was bent. I don;t know it was bent on purpose to be able to see better or if Grandpa hit something and it bent.

The ones I have on the truck now which you see in my gallery (you can see the old ones in the gallery too, in the before pics) measure: 101/4 on the driver's side and 11" on the passenger side. I don't remember where I got these 2 arms, I think ebay, but one was longer and I cut the bottom 2-3 inches off to make it match the original ones on my truck. The other one was not cut.

So my question: Did they make different length arms, perhaps longer ones for bigger trucks as opposed to F-100 pickups? And remember these type mirrors are the original mirrors for the '53-'56 trucks. I have never seen the round chrome mirrors pictured or listed in any Ford literature, dealer posters, or accessories catalogs.

Abe, Thanks for the measurements. I believe you are probably right about
longer armed mirrors for the bigger trucks. I have seen some photos / ads
where the mirror head is up near the top of the door. I looked at mine and it would be easy to shorten it to look stock if need be. I agree also on the current mirrors everyone uses and claims to stock, too. I have never seen them in ads either. I know there was a discussion on here a while back
about their origin, but don't recall the details.

Finally got to the shelf with the good stuff.

This may not be helpful since these are the larger 5x8 mirrors but the part number is COTZ-17696 D
One kit is the mirror with stainless plus the mounting bracket and lower tube along with some hardware.

These will work much better on the 53 vs the small round ones that are on there now.

Oops sorry about the upside down and sideways pictures.

2 small round mirrors on drivers side only one on passenger side. Neither one does much good. Top (roof mount) mirror works great though!

Anyone know is that DSA number on the box a military number or designation of some sort?

You've had these on your shelf all these years? Good for you!

I don't know what the DSA number means but the C0TZ means it was for a 1960 Truck. With the exception of the 5x8 mirror they are very very similar to the 53-56 mirror arms and mirrors.

Are you going to paint them black? Be sure to show us pics when you get them mounted.
