12v slot converted to 3 prong outlet

Hey everyone!

I want to convert the 12v slot into a 3-prong outlet so I can plug in my laptop and other electrical devices to the car. I am wondering if this is possible.

I just sold my 05 Civic Si (lots of stereo modding) and picked up my 09 XLT supercrew two days ago and as far as I know I have never seen a part like this.

If there is such a part, can anyone tell me where to get it and how much it is?

Where can I go to find out how to remove the instrument panel safely, I want to install an amp also.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

- Matt

Not unless your computer runs on 12V-you most likely will have to use either a power inverter (cheap ones are at the auto parts store) or get the 12V adapter made for your computer (bigger bucks). Chris

Instead of converting your 12V power point get a iGo everywhereMAX all-in-one laptop adapter; http://www.igo.com/Laptop+Netbook-Ch...vt/ps001250007 I use one in my tow truck. It also functions as a charger for a multitude of devices including my Bluetooth earpiece. It comes with both 12V and 110V input cables allowing you to move the power supply between your vehicle and any convenient AC power receptacle. I have the power supply that came with my laptop in the house and only need to carry the laptop out to the truck where I plug it in.

I like that Shorebird. I'd never seen one of those before and may check into it. I have been using this for quite a while now and it has worked well also:

http://www.targus.com/us/product_det...?sku=PAPWR005U

It has a three prong plug in and works fine too. I picked it up at Target for $30 about two years ago and haven't had any problems with running anything off of it including my laptop. It also has an additional 12V plug-in above the AC plug so you're not giving up your 12V power source and can still use it for your cell phone, etc.

A "low voltage acdc converter"? Huh?

Brute - you have two options. One, look into a DC-DC converter like the iGo unit mentioned above, or something purpose-built for your laptop. This will be more efficient, but less flexible. Two, look at an inverter - I like the Xantrex and Samlex products. I will have a Samlex 600-watt pure-sine inverter in my truck when my install is complete. These units produce 110VAC from the 12VDC in your truck. This is less efficient - you are converting from 12VDC to 110VAC, then 110VAC to whatever your laptop needs (probably 18-20VDC) but is more flexible.

You would be lucky if that POS would even charge a cell phone.

It says "NOTE: Not for large electronics like Laptop computers, DVD players, Printers, etc" lol.

Anyways I went to Radioshack and bought the Enercell 75 watt power inverter. It has a 3-prong outlet and usb input and I tested it just to see if it works and it seems fine but I need it for long-term testing (movies).

tylus has a good reputation on FTE. tylus has a good reputation on FTE.
look at Best Buy. I bought a converter several years ago.

not just any old 3 prong setup will work. take a look at your Laptop power supply. it will have the minimum power ratings.

then find a converter that supplies AT LEAST that much amperage and voltage.

mine cost me $70. but it will support a laptop, and provides another 12volt outlet so you can run something like a Radar Detector at the same time.

These things don't run cheap. You get what you pay for. Cheap out, and you might blow your Laptop power supply...or melt your converter.
btw, I have the older version of this bad puppy

I won't be running my laptop off the battery but I will keep that in mind for other devices.
