Around here, people just expect there to be a hitch, every truck has one. Iv grown up and learned to avoid it. I have hit my shins and knees a few times, but its most often becasue im doing something rather stupid. As for the protection it provides, the only time it really provide much protection is in small impact. If you need somethings stouter, go with a 6x6 x1/2in thick square tubing across the back like me. I have yet to see it move.
Hey, twice I've helped push people, either into parking lot, or to a gas station, with my grill guard, and yes it's removable (front hitch), but as soon as I do it this fall, I know some deer is going to run out of front of me.

I have had two stolen from the bed of a truck and drove 30 miles to pick up a trailer with no hitch when i was keeping it in the garage. I keep mine in the reciever with a locking pin.

there is actually a nice little ledge that the sit on, slightly wedged under the seat so they don't rattle, or tear up any of the wooden items that reside behind my seat... If there is enough momentum to get those things moving and free from the seat, the set of dominoes on my dashboard and the ammunition behind the seat probably already did me in...
In a regular cab pickup, there isn't a whole lot of room for things to move in the event of a rollover... the cab just kind of flattens.

Your in bed tool box full?
I am in the same boat as you as far as safety.
I have all my tools in a E350, nothing between them and me.
If I add cargo( scrap, building supply's etc. ) it just gets worse

I got an 8' bed for a reason... The necessities that will get me home stay behind or under the seat, if I'm towing, I'll put a few extras in the trailer.
I've got a 3/4 ton pickup with a cargo limit of 2,900# per the door sticker... and unfortunately, tools don't pay per trip...
I can understand that.
Between towing scrap, towing cars, trucks and tractors and taking my tractor places and having to have every thing I might need to fix it in a field in the middle of noware, I have my truck full.
If I use my reg cab pick up, The cab and tool box are both stuffed.
If I use the E350 ( 95% of the time I do ) I have about the width of the van x 3 feet worth of tools, chains and tie downs.

Now THAT would scare me. In the event of a roll-over (God forbid), those will become lethal projectiles. Unless you've got them restrained somehow.

Had to chuckle to myself today when I went to TSC (Tractor Supply Company) a place where ranchers, farmers and rural people go. I counted 39 3/4 ton and up trucks and everyone had the ball hitch in. I then went over to Lowes and the same thing with 27 trucks in the parking lot. I think its petty silly that the government is going to tell you when you can and cannot have your hitch in. It looks like our free country is not as free as we think it should be! Yes, I know I live in Texas and Trucks and trailers are a way of life, but where is this stupidity going to end.

Yeah, you've convinced me Monckywrench. It's a basic flaw of modern society to expect the intellectually superior to inconvenience themselves for the mentally challenged masses.
What we really need are more laws to protect stupid people from themselves and go ahead and officially remove words like Accountability and Responsibility from the English language. [/Rant]
I checked with a couple of NY DMV offices. They never heard of a reg. that you have to remove ball mount. They said it might be a DOT reg. I'll have to see if I can find a road check and ask.
