Note that I use bolts, not pins.
I'd not object to a DOT requirement for locknuts (which I use anyway) or even "locknuts + hitch pin clips".
There is no legit objection to positive hardware retention. The cheesy "pins with clips that wrap around the pin" are cheap to produce but not very secure by comparison.
There was an accident near my house where one of those street racer type cars, not watching where he was going decided to try and drive up under a raised truck If it hadn't been for the drop hitch stopping the car when it impacted the engine block, the truck and the probably would have been totaled and the cars passenger could have been killed by the time the car got to the differential of the truck, but then that brings up another issue, who needs such a high truck. The kids father was there a started yelling at the trucks driver about it being his fault that the kids expensive racing engine got ruined. Talk about not accepting responsibility.

Don't you know it's always the other guys fault.LOL I have an idea. Leave a more space between you and the person ahead of you so when he slams on his brakes because he was following too close, you can simply apply yours and stop without a panic.
I believe this is a bogus law. If you want to remove your ball, go ahead. If someone else doesn't want to, then that is ok too. Stop trying to make everybody do it your way.
This post is not directed at anybody in particular, it is a general post so please do not think I am targeting a particular person. I am targeting a bogus law.

I agree, well said. No matter whether you leave your hitch or remove it, we should all be able to agree on one thing. We don't need no more damned laws!!!
Next thing you know they'll make it a hate crime.

I have a VERY BIG dent in the bottom of the back lid on my otherwise dentless Tracer wagon from some inconsiderate lazy person who backed into a parking spot in a Lowe's parking lot and didn't consider the extra length and "ramming potential" of their hitch.
They didn't accept responsibility for the dent either
Take'em out!

The person who did this probably would have hit your vehicle anyway because they obviously have poor distance judgement. People who do this type of damage and do not leave a note or wait for the owners, SUCK!

I love how people assume that they would have done it anyways
You are right, that kind of thing never happens.

The biggest problem I see that can happen is for some reason the lock pin comes out and the hitch ball comes out onto a busy high speed highway. Don't tell me it can't happen as it happened a couple of vehicles in front of me on route 80

While I don't doubt they do come loose, I bet of all objects tossed from trucks which cause deaths, ball hitches cause the fewest.
