My 2001 4X4 7.3L Wanders all over the roadway. I replaced the front hubs and bearings, seamed to help a little any help?

Thanks Wallz. I will give the threads a read. I have a 2001 4X4 and it wanders weather towing or not. I have 130k on the truck. New tires, hubs. I think it needs shocks. I do tow a horse trailer alot. I mean a lot. It is hooked up more than not.

 

first thing I would do is adjust the play in the worm gear ball bearing... Next look at ball joints and tie rod ends for play . jack the front end of the ground a few inches and put a long pry bar between the ground and wheel if you can feel any play or flex when you lift up and down on the prybar you have eith bad ball joints or bad bushings in the leaf spring eyes (less common issue) as you already did front bearings they are eliminated as a cause. the locking hub will not affect the wandering at all

 

After you have determined that the front end of your Excursion is in good shape the next couple of mods will help greatly!

1. Tighten up the steering box (do this per the specs, don't over tighten)

2. Install a dual steering stabilizer kit up front

3. Purchase the Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks if you need new ones and set them at there firmest setting.

4. Install some Firestone Ride Rite air bags in the rear and this will stiffen up the rear suspension for when you are towing.

I had the same wandering all over the road on my 04 Excursion when it was brand new, it's pretty common on these trucks. I have done the above mods to my Ex and it drives straight and true even while towing! I didn't do the RAS setup because I didn't need it, but that is another thing you can do. I did air bags instead of the RAS and it did wonders!!

 

I have an '02 V10, had the same problems. Two weeks ago, I changed the shocks to Bilsteins, and replace inner and outer tie rod ends. Truck has a much more solid feel on the road and corners really well.
